Ticking noise
Ticking noise
04 Maxima 92,000miles
Hi all,
I believe I have the dreaded ticking noise coming from the guides. But I do have a couple of questions. I am very good at keeping up on my oil changes, checking fluids and so forth. I change the oil regularly with mobil1Syn. The ticking started about a month ago and has progressively gotten worse. It sounds dead on like it's coming from where the chainguides are.
I just went outside to make a little video to capture the sound and checked my oil, (it's due to be changed next week) and noticed that it was a little low, 1/2 quart to be exact. I always triple check after an oil change and then recheck after two days to make sure it is at level, so I assume I either didn't check it as thoroughly as I usually do or it burned a little oil. Whetever the case is, I put the oil in and the noise considerable has gone down.
I still hear it from the chain guide side and I'm wondering if it just gets some lube that it quiets it down a little.
So here is my real question: I know that the dealer is going to charge me somewhere near 2,000 to fix everything. I just got laid off and don't have the funds. What bugs is our car is paid off and not under warranty.
I'm a very capable mechanic and have worked on cars all of my life. I would consider myself a couple steps above a weekend garage mechanic. Is this a job I can do myself? Are there any writups on the procedure or is it pretty straightforward with taking the cover off and replacing? I have found some pictures but would love a write up. Know of any? Or am I just spinning my wheels here thinking about doing it myself?
thanks guys
Brent

Hard
Try to get an extended warranty from Nissan or anther reliable company
that will pay for the repairs plus see do they have monthly payment plans it sounds like your timing chain and tensioners need replacing which cost over 2300.00 to repair
