Steering creaks when sitting still

This problem is getting on my last nerve. If I am sitting still (car running) and I turn the wheel from left to right, I get a sorta creaking noise. Here are some facts and things that I have already done:

Struts and Strut mounts changed
Both Axles changed
Inner and outer tie rods changed
Lower control arms changed
Power Steering Fluid checked
Power Steering Pump belt checked

I am hoping this will be a "man just spray WD40 on your insert here , and you'll be good to go" fix...

It might be helpful to have someone turn the wheel for you while you lay underneath to get a better idea where the noise is coming from. It's kind of hard to say what is causing it just from your description, but I wish I could. Good luck and post anymore info you find out that might help with a diagnosis.

Had an alignment done today and no issues with the rack. Tech insisted that it was the strut mount. Calgon - take me away!!!

Did you install the struts and mounts yourself? If so, did you make sure to reinstall the thin little gray nylon/plastic/teflon shim on top of the strut assembly before putting it back in? It's my understanding that the shim prevents metal on metal contact between the strut and the strut mount. It seems safe to assume that if not reinstalled the two might rub and cause the noise you are describing.

Hope this helps some...

If yoiu have a creaking when turning the wheel sitting still, it could be the ball joints. If the noise is higher up, it's your strut mounts.

+1 I would definitely recommend having someone help you with this. That way, you could lay underneath while they turn the wheel. Also, if you have one, an automotive stethoscope would be beneficial. Keep us posted!
