Weird metallic whine before shift up

I have been getting a quite loud weird metallic whining sound before upshifts lately when tranny is cold. Did that to me tonight constantly while driving for a few minutes, like a constant metallic whistling sound or something. Sound then went away. If I manually downshift from 5 to 3 I would hear it faintly and constantly while in 3rd at like 4k rpm.

Any clue??? Does it at higher rpm. Doesnt seem to do it on park. Tranny issue or what?

Ok I checked this morning. Seems to do it most when cold. Does it in park so it seems to come from the engine.

At about 2k rpm on a cold car, I get a whistling metallic sound. Doesnt sound like the worn chain tensionner sound. Really like a high pitch whistle. When engine gets hot, noise seems to disappear. For some reason it did it yesterday while driving at 60 mph, but it was -30 celcius outside.

Any clues ?

No offense but try renting/driving another older car for few weeks. then get back to your Maxima again. I am sure you will forget half of your complints about maxima then.

Well said, KevMaster!

Had to drive an '89 Sunbird for a few weeks while my transmission was being repaired. Never again did I complain about my maxima

I've had the same whining sound for years and have never figured it out. Sometimes it seems to go away for a month or so and then come back. Maybe I've just mentally blocked it out or cranked the radio up. Mine alway happened around 2000 RPM I think and gear didn't matter. I suspected a metal part like a heat shield resonating and tried tightening them up but didn't seem to help. Update us if you find it.

Good luck.

Yes, I get it often at around 2K rpm, with cold engine. Doesnt happen much as I let the engine warm for 15 min before leaving house. (winter).

Doesnt sound like a rattle to me. Really like metallic whistle or something. No clue... Maybe a belt? (doesnt sound like a belt to me, but?)

Im not going to tell you to check the exhaust flanges that are know to break and cause noises.
