Engine whine
Engine whine
Just wanted to get some confirmation before making my decision.
Today I went in to get my regular oil change and also to flush the brake fluid at my local stealership. Amazingly, it took roughly 3 hrs for them to do this.
Finally, the guy at the desk had mentioned that the service tech noticed a whining noise coming from my engine and recommended that I change the timing chain. Stating that it can hit the pistons and what nots.....which will result in the replacement of the engine if it's left the way it is. The final cost of replacing the timing chain will be $1500!
I'm kind of skeptical about what they suggested because my car starts up fine and runs good. It sounds pretty normal to me and I do expect the engine to be a little louder since I'm at 84k + miles. I've also done the 30 and 60k mile service along with regular oil changes (3 - 5k miles)
So, should I trust them or not? I appreciate any suggestions or opinions.

Yes...OP require to change chains as well otherwise older chain with aggressive teeths will eat-up new tensioners again. Newer chains comes with less aggressive teeths and recommended to change while someone is at it. already.
Then asked me, "Didn't you notice this when you start up the car" without saying anything about them revving the engine or anything of that sort.
What do you think about my situation?
Weird thing is that they didn't say it was the tensioners.
So, I'm in a complete loss for words at this point.

Chain AND tensioners need to be replaced.
I downloaded the TSB last night and it covers through 2008.

You have to register to download. You can download 2 per 24 hours.
Thanks a lot man, I appreciate it.
Now I'm wondering if they also change the secondary timing chain too or if they are gonna just replace the primary and call it a day....

Well, change of plans. My one and only other vehicle (2004 GMC Yukon XL) seems to have developed a clogged catalytic converter. I had to cancel my appointment for the Maxima cause that would have left me with no vehicle. I will update on their findings when I get it checked.
Damn man, hope you get that all figured out.
But, I just set up an appointment to get my timing chain changed. I mentioned to them that I also wanted to get the tensioners replaced too but they insisted that they only needed to change the tensioner "shoes" which was also mentioned on the TSB.
That's correct right? Or do I also have to change the tensioner themselves?
Anyways, the stealership is trying to charge me 1750 now. MIGHT have to just cancel the appointment to see what you find out from your appointment. That's a LOT of money right there and I don't wanna spend that much unless I have to. You know what I'm saying....

Only the secondary chains and shoes on the secondary tensioners need to be replaced. Since it is out of warranty some people replace everything while they are in there (primary guides, primary tensioner and primary chain) since it all needs to come apart off to get to the secondaries.
Well......2k later. My car is running good and the loud whining noise is gone! Yay (in a sarcastic tone of voice) At least they gave me a 1 year warranty on their work or so they say......

Hell yeah man.....that 2k pretty much killed me. I almost wanted to strangle somebody LOL
But hey, I gotta do what I gotta do to keep my car running. Plus, there's to much shady mechanics around my city that have your car in a worse condition from when you brought it to them in the first place. At least with my stealership. They do the job right.
I say it's worth it since I HOPEFULLY won't have to worry about fixing the timing chain/tensioners or anything major for a WHILE.

Hey 6.5 what is the fourth and eleventh digit on your vin. I've noticed that not alot of 6.5 gens are reporting this problem and I am wondering if its a problem specific to where the engine was manufactured or something like that. If so we could use our vin to determine if we're gonna have the problem or not.
A mom pop shop would would do all of that in around $700-$900.
6.5 gens do still have bad tensioner shoes on secondary chains, they did fix the main slack guide for the main chain.
If i were you, id replace everything when you go there, all 3 chains, water pump, all of the plastic guides, the plastic shoes for the secondary chains ect.
From courtesy, it will run you about $350 in parts.
