Im thinking about putting a Nismo Cold air Intake on my 08 maxima. I dont want the engine getting water in it so I was told that I would need a Hydrosheild or Bypass Valve on top of the Intake to protect the engine. What is the diffrence between the two? Whitch would you prefer to go with?

IMO buying a hydroshield or a bypass valve are just a waste of money, using a short ram will do the same trick and the negative effects with using any of them are very minor. They will cut down the amount of cold air flow by a very minor amount. The great thing about a nismo intake is they are made so that you can install them as a short or long ram intake. I have one myself and to be honest they don't make that much of a difference, only major difference I noticed was the feelng of your RPM's dropping when you take your foot off the accelerator.

Hydroshield is like a condom that goes over the filter. Its water resistant but not water proof.

i have an 05 and the nismo cai already a bypass built into it. i threw on a hydroshield just to keep things safe and didnt see any negative effects from it. id say both or go short ram like stated above if your concerned.

dont get either, go with the short ram like everyone is talking about. this way you don't EVER have to worry. also i think it has a better sound.

I've had the F5 full cai and have had 0 problems for the last two years. Keep in mind that I live in Toronto and there is a sht load of snow and rain so unless you plan to drive into a lake or into a snowbank and rev the engine, you should be good man.

I bought a Nismo CAI and it came with the bypass valve. I haven't had any problems either. I wouldn't go with the short ram because, IMO (and this will get a lot of discussion too I'm sure), you're just sucking in hot engine air. I bought the Nismo CAI on eBay for $250.

NISMO CAI comes with water bypass.

I have it on my Max. No problems up here in the PNW and it's been rainy as hell this fall/winter

As long as you don't drive through several inches of standing water you don't need either.

yes it is true that the hot engine air will lessen the power, just like a hot day. but its not significant. the gains in getting the cai is mainly by a more breathable filter. if you heat shield the short ram, and gut the stock box from the fender so it has unlimited access to fresh air, it will be NO different then the long fitting.

and yes, it sounds better with the short fitting. a full cai sounds exactly like what its doing, echoing the engine noise through a long metal tube. imo
