Battery terminal?

My positive battery terminal is corroded to the point of being mushy. Is it possible to simply replace the metal part that grips the battery post? Or do I have to replace the whole plastic piece with the fuse and stuff?

are you talking about replacing just the terminal? you identified it as a "terminal" in the last sentence so im confused as to why you called it a "metal part" just now unless you mean something else? if you mean "terminal" then yes, you can just replace the terminal on the battery lead unless the corrosion spread to that part.

Or do I have to replace the whole plastic piece with the fuse and stuff?
you don't need the plastic cover but it does help significantly slow the rate of oxidation and keeps dirt and dust from getting in between the terminal and post making for a bad connection. about the fuse? what do you think? we have fuses for a very good reason, unless of corse you like the look of flames on your car.

Mine did the same thing, turned into putty...

I went with one of these (below), but any solid single bolt post similar will do...

The hardest part was removing the bold holding the original terminal connector. Because everything is either plastic, or the deteriorated metal, there was very little to grab onto to torque against the wrench. That by itself took some creativity and patience...

Also got some of the acid cleaner, it neutralizes the acid in the exposed metal/wires of everything that remains, so it should help prevent another outbreak. Can be messy, I used plastic to catch the spray during application, so it didn't get all over the engine. Wait, rinse with hose, then redo again. Took several applications to get rid of all the old residue.

Oh, I also removed the tray the battery sat in, scoured and repainted...it had some rust buildup...that's a good Idea to do to, since you'll have everything out anyway...

Mine is really starting to look like crap also. It's just a tiny piece of copper holding the terminal.

I think I will replace it with some quality solid stuff like above. And then install a grounding kit. Maybe next spring, now it's -30 celcius outside.... Will probably help the whole electrical system to work better.

^I bought this one and it has been great until now. Any Nissan dealer would have it in stock.

it looks so flimsy (like OEM). To me it's like wrapping a battery post with saran wrap.

Why isnt it chunky like the neg post? To me it would seem that a chunkier post would allow more current through?
