Thoughts On CVT..
I went from a 04 Maxima with a auto 5 speed to an 07 with a CVT. I really lke the CVT, but there is a learning curve on how to drive it. But all in all i like it alot beter than the Auto in the 04. I was just wondering how everyone else feels...
Driving a CVT is a bit different from a auto IMO. You really have to adjust the pressure you put on the gas pedal depending on how it's running. For example, I start out light and then put more pressure until I feel that it's trying to stall. Then let go of the pressure a bit just to get it going again.
Overall, test this theory for yourself and it does take a little bit of practice to get it right. People bash on the CVT a lot but, it really isn't all that bad when it comes down to it. It actually accelerates faster then an auto.

You got a 07? Congrats man that's really awesome welcome to the 6.5 club. You know...like your typical 6th Genner will bash on the cvt bc there jealous they don't have one but you my freind just bought a very nice reliable peice of technology. Also I know it's not like a true Stick shift but you do still get the down shift feel and trust me it's fun to here that cvt wind up when you accelerate. Have fun with it sir. What color and what trim package did you get?
I like the CVT. Much smoother and I like the way it feels when you accelerate. Drove an altima with a standard auto which had more Hp when we bought the 08 and the Maxima felt like it had better acceleration even with the hp penalty.
Having said that, I do think Nissan missed the boat with some people that really want a stick shift!

i drove a cvt loaner max, i hated it.. i was stuck on watching that needle sit 500 rpm under redline, and didn't like the constant noise. i sounded like my jetskii, and if you put exhaust on it, it would sound worse... like a loud jetskii.
total nissan fail... cvt in a car for enthusiast is like an oxymoron..
cvt should be reserved for economy cars, not sport/performance cars. its not in the spirit of motoring..
however, if you bought the max for luxury and looks and are not interested in performance, then i'd say its a great buy and a good car, but for me and others like me? fail... I know those reasons are the target audience for nissan but its stupid. unless Nissan steps up their game, and produces a 300+ HP AWD 3.7L maxima, this is the last one i will own. my next car is going to be a 2011 G37x. very dissapointed in Nissan progress with our cars.. its like they decided to shelf any design plans and concentrate on their idiotic leaf and econo cars

This is funny you say... i thought you had a CVT in your max?? And my friend the CVT stands up to any auto out there. I have noticed that Its more responsive than an auto in some aspects, and you don't get any shift lag. though when you do use it is "auto/manual' i feel the shift oints could be a little more spaced out..
2007 nissan se, fully loaded, no nav

but still... i'd rather not have one. sounds weird i know. its kinda the same reason people buy manual transmissions when there are automatics out there. it much nicer to be able to sit back with some coffee and cruize in total luxury, but that kills the spirit of performance driving. the cvt is another step above the auto in that respect.
I got the CVT because i actually enjoy Nissan vehicles, had a 88, 96, and now 08. I got it because of the styling and their performance. Glad I didnt get an 04-06 though, that tranny thing would have made me madd
I avoided cvt because i wanted to leave my options open for F/I and didn't want to be the first one to put a turbo on a cvt. glad i did too because im getting one in march! i still need to beef up my trans tho like churnmax did
The 2007-2008 cvt kicks butt when all said is done. Performace is there, Reliability is there. I had a 2000 Maxima SE before driving this CVT. Yeah sure you miss the shift feel, but you get over that really fast once you own this car. You learn to master the cvt and all say it again, it kicks butt!!!!

Its all preference I guess.
I like the 07-08 front end and interior better,,,,but didnt care for the CVT.
I was lucky enough to find an 06 with only 26,000 miles on it for a great price.
I did buy the 100k mile extended warranty to cover my azz on the trans though !!!

I love my cvt 08 se .... Maybe because its my daily driver and i dont race the car ..... I previously owned a 330ci 5spd and race an 08 maxima and only won by a half car length ... At that time i was impressed by the maxima .... Cvt def better then auto and still can be used in manual mode for what its worth

ive gotten used to the CVT and lack of shifting, did take a lil while but now that im used to it i love it. if you floor it you'll ball out or can cruise 1800 rpms 80 mph not making a sound. 10 year warranty dont hurt either...
CVT Opinion
I have driven both the 04 and an 07/08 Maxima and have to say that the CVT
is not as good as the 04 transmission.
Yes the CVT is smooth just like the 04 BUT its not as responsive as the 04
transmission when pressing the accelerator.
Also, the 04/05 model non CVT model feels more luxurious in the ride quality
then the 07/08 with the seats and the suspension.
I test drove both and the 07/08 suspension has alot more of a firm or harder
ride quality like a sports car and lacks the luxurious, cushion feel of the 04/05 model.
The 04/05 model was the best maxima they every made in terms of design,
luxury and ride quality.
