5th and 6th gear not engaging

My car does not want to shift into 5th and 6th gear. When you move the shifter to the right and then try to shift up into 5th or down into 6th it feels like I'm hitting a wall.

1st through 4th work fine, so I don't really know what the problem could be.

Maybe worn bushings or bad shifter cables?

I'd really appreciate some help.
Thanks!

There are not many 04s with 6-speed manuals. I believe the percentage of 04s with this trannie is about 4% or so, thus we are a rare breed.

My 04 has over 120 K miles on her, and I have never experienced this problem. I changed the trannie fluid in my 6-speed at about 35 K miles to synthetic and changed again (Amsoil) at about 85 K miles. Probably need to change again this summer.

How do you shift into reverse? You do have to push the shifter that way to get into that gear, too.

I will be watching to see if you can solve your problem, in the event that mine has the same problem later.

Sounds like your tranny is going. Might want to look into rebuilding or replacing it through junkyards, ebay, classified ads here etc to save a few bucks. Start with the basics like shift linkage, clutch fluid and tranny flush to see if that will fix it.

Keep us posted with the outcome.

I just rebuilt the tranny. So im thinking it's the shifter. I still need to find time to mess with it.

Check the bracket on the trans, might just need a slight adjustment to fix.

That's what I'm thinking it is.
Gonna mess with that today or tomorrow.

Thanks.

that happened to me last year so in nov 2010, i had the whole tranny rebuilt plus replaced ALL the hydrolics from the pedal to the slave mc. it got progressively harder and harder to get into 6th and finally it just stopped. 1-4 was fine but 5-6 was gone.

hmm that doesn't sound good. I rebuilt the tranny like a month ago.

UPDATE:

Checked the shifter bracket where the cables mount onto. Everything looked good, but I swapped it for a sentra spec-v one that I knew was good. Still have the same problem where 5th and 6th won't work.

I'm stumped.

I rebuilt it myself. Followed the fsm to a T, but there is a slight possibilty I could have messed something up internally I guess.

I drive it hard all the time. lol

I posted this in the 5th gen forum too.

Did you try it manually from the shifter assembly on the tranny?

Still gotta try that.

Although, I might have an idea. Could the shift check, screws into the side of the trans case be a problem. In the fsm it said to replace that and I didn't. I wonder if that is messed up and not allowing it to go into gear.

I also didn't replace the stopper bolt which it also said to replace.

I replaced the internals with sentra spec v internals. The spec v internals have 20k miles on them.

Only thing maxima on this tranny now is the bellhousing.

I have the 6 speed in my tranny...it sucks all my gears work but the shifter is so sloppy you would think it was falling apart..my mechanic says how the mounts hang on the car itself that leads to sloppy shifting..

Fenderguy...thats what im talking about for you too, check the nut under the dash by the clutch pedel.. im sure it needs to be tighten and it should tighten the shifting up drastically....

Krazy6- my only other thought that could be causing this problem. if i recall i think the shifter itself is the issue.. the sentra shifter i think is alittle different then the maxima.. not by much but that could be the issue at hand....... check the shifter rods... i think thats the issue.. switching from a 4cyl trans, to a 6cyl trans..

also would call the nissan dealer ****.. i mean stealership and ask them for the part numbers from the spec -v transmission, an d the maxima transmission , if there not the same then u have ur problem solved there and need to get the rest of the spec-v parts (shifter, houseing ect...)

-That will affect more than just 5th/6th gear....

-False!

-False Again, can't go solely by that, they may even have different part #'s even though they are exactly the same part, EG Nissan 350z Fenders, they're all the same from 03-08 but magically in 07 they change!!!
