Is it possible for a VQ35DE to consume a full 4.4liters of oil in less than a month?

Is it possible for a VQ35DE to consume a full 4.4liters of oil in less than a month?

So this is my situation. I changed my oil and filter around the christmas last month but haven't really checked the oil level since then because it was just 2-3 weeks ago. It's minus stupid over here right now so I thought the rattling noise I was hearing for the pass few day was just because it's cold.

So I let the car sit all day at work before I checked it and to my surprise the oil level didn't even register on the stick . The oil isn't leaking because my driveway has not oil spills nor is there any at work where i'm parked for most of the day. The car has approximately 214K on it so is that normal for my engine to consume that much oil in such a short period of time???

Yikes. I think you would notice a huge puddle under your car if you lost 4.4 liters or there would be a lot of smoke from the tail pipes. No smell of burnt oil? Nothing dripping down the engine block? You sure you put the drain plug in right and didn't cross thread it and strip it?

And that's why I didn't bother to check the oil. There isn't any oil leaking, I mean I won't see the smoke unless someone tells me, i've done my oil change a thousand times so i'm sure I didn't cross thread it, I loosen and tighten my oil filter wrist tight, no oil anywhere on my drive way or at work where the car is being parked for hrs. I usually use 10W 30

Did you crawl under there and look at the rear of the engine and see if there is anything running down? Sometimes the oil will drip onto the exhaust and when its hot you can smell it burning. But if no signs of drips then after it sits overnight and is cold, have someone start it for you and if you see the puff of grey smoke at start up then its burning oil. Being from the north you know the difference between regular exhaust smoke from the low air temps and the darker exhaust of burning oil.
I use 5W30.

I don't see any blue smoke when I auto start it. I'll just see a little smoke when I rev or floor it. Even if it was leaking on the exhaust I doubt I could leak out a whole jug of oil and not show. I mean I know the car consumes oil but I never checked it within a month and seen it totally down

You might have a pretty serious leak somewhere. With my 4th gen rear main seal leak, it was leaking for a while before I noticed it because it wasn't leaking straight through to the pavement. it was getting held up on all the skid plastic shields on the underside of the car. Im assuming when it built up to where the shield couldn't hold it anymore THEN I noticed it on the ground. If I were you Id jack that bia up today and take off all your fender shields and the shields on the underside and have a good look see. Burning that much oil seems nearly impossible but I don't claim to know everything so maybe it is? My rear main seal most of the leaked oil was going to the ypipe and burning before it dripped too so look for charred surfaces

When you took off the old oil filter, did you check to see that the gasket came off with it?

Always man. If that seal stayed on and the oil pressure build, the oil would of came spraying out. I learnt that lesson on my accord. R.I.P honda. I'm shocked because there isn't any oil spills under the car or no blue smoke. I mean the engine has high kms but burning the oil in less than a month is just mind boggling

Have you drained the oil and measured the amount that came out?

I usually top it up anywhere between 3-4 times between oil changes, but i've never really seen the oil consumed in such a short time. It would be difficult to determine that without topping it up. The egine will have no oil if I left it till the next oil change

worn out piston rings or a bad gasket

get under your car and carefully look at the rear exhaust manifold and surrounding to see if you see oil ...

This is odd that you lost that much oil in such a short period of time, and it's lot leaking everywhere or smoke billowing out of the exhaust. It's gotta be going somewhere... Did you check your coolant to see if it's been contaminated?

We all know that the oil either being sucked up through the pcv or blows by the piston rings

this is kind of off topic, but i once rented an altima for a vacation trip to florida. I picked up the car in cols ohio, drove to pittsburgh, then from pitt went to west virgina. Well to make a long story short, checked the oil in the car, NONE!! drove the car about 1000 miles without oil. Couldn't beleive i didn't blow the thing up, it was a rental after all.

I'll be installing new spark plugs,PCV valve and the spacers when it gets warm enough to work outside. So it's worn out piston rings? The engine does has a 213K but all the oil gone in less than a month. Insane

Get one of your friends to drive behind you to see how bad, if at all, you're smoking out the exhaust. Small amounts probably won't be visible, but if it's burning this much, that blue smoke caused by that much oil burning off will surely show itself coming out of the tail pipes.

Time to start running a thicker grade 15w50, my buddy had a similar issue but only 60k on the engine, his oil burning problem is gone

I've been told to use thicker oil but the temperature reaches as cold as -40 and i'm sure that oil would be too thick

If you were using synthetic, switch to regular oil. It's less likely to seep out/burn off. Also, are you the original owner? Maybe the previous owner neglected the car.

At -40, 15W40 would be like vaseline

It is obviously leaking somewhere...check the full underside of the car, clean what you find, and start up the car, and observe for leaks.

Did that. There's no oil spills on my driveway so that's ruled out. There is signs of oil on the engine but that could be from oil changes or badly poored oil. I just keep checking the oil every so ofter

Check common areas if they're soaked in oil, like the crankshaft pulley seal and lip, rear main oil seal, the oil pressure sensor ect.

Sometimes rear main oil seal leaks while only moving and stops while engine is off, known issue on quest, but we have the same engine so keep that in mind. Check for oil spots under the engine, clean them. If they come back, you found your problem.

Ive never delt with an oil burning maxima but i'd say if you burn a quart or two between changes normaly it's burning. If it usualy never moves between changes your probably leaking
