depends on production month..somewhere around july or august of 2004 nissan releazed a new batch of maximas with most issues taken care of.
anyways, quality is nowhere near those made in 90's anymore.
just another affordable sports sedan though. German vehicle with similar specs is twice the price, but still with issues all over, read consumer reports. If you think nissan screwed up, read about imports just for fun

I'm not saying its bad quality or anything like tht...I love my maxima...just had a bunch of issues and they just suck!I'm a perfectionist and they must be fixed or I can't sleep...believe me I kno the downside to german cars yikes, I had a vr6 jetta new issue almost weekly but no complaints at all with the motor or transmission.seems to me every car has a common issue here and there...when are they gonna make a car tht lasts forever with no problems??? Only in my dreams

Well I just hit 113k...guess I bought the booboo maxima

...and to top it off I didn't notice at the time somehow the door must have got hit when it was at the dealership or in transport, there was a repair done on the door, I didnt notice till it was in the driveway, they told me I musta parked next to someone..but clearly it was a repair.

I have had the transmission issue (fixed with Shift Kit) and now the timing chain guide problem . Other than that that this car has been good to me I just wish I would have know about these 04-06 automatic transmissions before hand . I would have just got a 6mt .

I'm jealous of you guys with no problems...

Manual tranny woulda prob been the best bet but I already have an s10 5speed and got rid of a 6speed jetta...wasn't in the mood for another m/t...gotta have the relaxing "lazy" drive in the max without shifting all the time

Seems a thread like this pops up every month or sooner. VR6toVO I have posted many threads like this on the car. I also come from a German background too and sorry to say the Maxima will never compare or even come close to what German cars have to offer, period.

Many on the boards think I am a hater on the car; the truth is I hate Nissan because of this car. Before I bought the Maxima, I had respect for Nissan and its higher end model line Infiniti, even wanted to get a G35 and thought it was the best car amongst the Japenese.

All this changed with ownership of my Maxima

Hmm where do I start? At 65k miles

1. Plastic timing chain guides (It will happen at some point due to the design)
2.Chrome roof trim peeling (Another fine product from Nissan)
3.Master cylinder unit (6 speed shift would not engage)

Around 73k miles
4. Moon roof leaks into the car when it rains (Had to force Nissan to fix after I threatened to call Nissan Corp, I believe there was a recall on the gasket)
5. Oil cooler o-ring gasket seems to develop leaks after a while (I’ve replaced this 4 times)

At 85k and recent miles
6. Replaced 3 motor mounts due to heavy cracking (**** poor design by Nissan after looking at them)
7. Front and Rear brakes replaced (Heavy car wears the breaks down quick)
8. Lower Ac pressure hose is leaking (notorious for leaking)
9. Water sloshing sound in glove compartment area, due to my AC hose leaking (others experience the same issues but mine is from the AC)
10. The cars handles horrible from the get go, seems if you do sharp turns or go over bumps the suspension seems to bottom out or feel like it’s going to fall apart. Doesn’t happen but man really?
11. Bumpy ride, stock ride.

I have the 6 speed transmission since all my cars have been manual, worst manual car ever!!!! The shifting is clunky and I have missed shifts when I engage. Sloppy design if you really take a look at it.

The design is nice with the 07-08’s being the best looking due to the front and rear bumper re-design, but that’s it. I have the leather package with Bose 6 disc system; I think Nissan needs to learn what real Leather and a real Bose system is, because it’s not cutting it in this car.

If you re-search the board you will see others having issues with the auto tranny and some with the same issues I have experienced. I didn’t re-search the car before hand, had I prob would have gotten a 6 speed C-Class Benz. Just my 2 cents

I agree with the fact german cars have way more to offer but when I had an 2007 x5 bimmer, truck was goreous and fully loaded but some things with german cars are just to much lol like how I needed to go update my transmission software...I was expecting them to pop an ipod out and do a software update I was like wtf software update...sure enough they did tht and the I drive went back to normal...my maxima is nice simple and comfortable but has its booboos idc tho I eventually fix it all...just a matter of pinpointing causes and issues and taking care of them, it my first nissan but I've had almost every major brand gm cars, dodge, mitsubishi, honda, toyota, bmw,vw,hyundai

I have to say ran into the least issues with my hyundai lol who woulda thought
