How important is the Power Steering Pressure Switch for my 2004 Maxima

After my timing chain broke while I was going 70 mph on interstate, I had to replace my motor. My 2004 Maxima engine had 177,000 miles on it. I found a used motor with 76,000 miles on it. While my mechanic was putting the motor in, he broke the Power Steering Pressure Switch. He told me that it runs fine without the Power Steering Pressure Switch and that it is not neccessary to replace it. Please advise me on the importance of the Power Steering Pressure Switch. What can happen if I don't have one? Please help... need some advice ASAP. Thank you

I will bet he dropped the subframe without disconnecting the harness. Easy to do, ask me how I know.

I believe it is used by the ECU to increase the engine speed slightly during times when the power steering pump puts additional load on the engine. This usually occurs when the steering wheel is turned near the lock position in either direction during low engine RPM, as is a parking situation.

Does it absolutely need to be there? No. Will anything go wrong with it missing? Again, no.

But for your mechanic to break it and not offer to replace it, well that is inexcusable. How do you know it is broken, did you see it, or did he readily admit it? He should quit with the excuses and fix the damage. You should not have to settle for his mistake, just because he doesn't want to spend the time to correct it.

this is what he broke, PS pressure sensor, I guess he doesn't want to fork out the $100 for the sensor, very unprofessional of him. I would have him replace it on his dime if it was his fault.

That switch activates every time the power steering system sees pressure. It tells the ECU to bump the idle slightly to compensate for the load.

Lets do a 3 stage what if analysis.
What can happen if that singnal isn't there? A stall while your pulling into a parking spot.
What can happen if you stall? You lose the ability to steer the vhicle.
What happens if you can't steer? You crash.

He broke it, one would EXPECT him to replace it.
Had he dropped your engine and shattered the oil pan or damaged a fender etc, wouldn't you EXPECT him to repair the damage?
