So on Saturday I was driving down Main St in San Diego between 24th and 32nd going to the base. The city has the road all tore up and steel plates all over the place. One of the plates was not covering the hole completely and BAM! @ 25mph I hit the "F"n thing. The right front tire blew and the car drove like crud, shaking, jittering and a slight drift to the right with the spare on. I went to Costco and had the tire changed (free thanks Costco). but the car still had shaking and jitter. So I had the car towed to Nissan today. They looked it over and found the strut blew out. So I called my insurance and they are covering it, I do have a $500 deductable that I will have to pay. I do find it rather odd that the rim did not bend or break, blowing the tire and strut you would think the rim would be damaged too.

My car has 90k on it and I would like to make it to 200k+. The extra warranty runs up next month so if there is anything wrong I asked Nissan to give it a good going over.

 

Seems like just a blown strut. Worst case scenario a bent subframe but I doubt it at the speeds you were going. A 500 deductible is a lot tho, the shock/strut would cost 60$ and another 100 for install, and another 80 for alignment and your set.

 

 

I was driving home late night from CT to Boston when i tried to avoid a bad hole on the interstate but caught one right after it w/ my reardriver side. For the nest 45 mins you can hear something loose like metal on metal. As soon as i got off my exit i pulled over and checked my trunk.. i thought my amp or something got looses and was banging around. everything seem the same. took it to a friends shop the next day as soon as he lifted it on the lift high enough we seen that the rear driver strut was not bolted. one screw snapped and the other broke off w/ a piece of the chasis still attached. no bent wheels which @ the time i had nismo's installed and no blown tire. replaced broken bolt and welded the small break back in place. been good eversince.

His estimate for repair is pretty accurate. I hope you didn't officially put this claim through your insurance yet. If the strut is really the only thing that is damaged, You are ripping yourself off and introducing the possibility of an insurance premium increase. If you don't feel like you can do it yourself, I would take the car to an independent mechanic, pay out of pocket, and leave the insurance company out of it.

Edit: Forgot that you'd probably want to replace the strut mount as well. Even still, however, the mount should be no more than $50.

 

I had to call my insurance to get the car towed. If the cost of the repair is under $500 then it's all out of pocket. If it's more, then I am only paying my deductable. I will then file a claim against the city for the deductable through my insurance. The city of San Diego should have closed that 1/4 mile stretch of road. It's all screwed up

So far Nissan is saying I should replace the following in pairs
Strut with housing and bearings
Tie rods
Front control arm and bushings

The insurance adjuster will be there tomorrow to approve the work.
I am not worried about my premium going up. This is my first claim in over 10 years.

 

Unless that pot hole was very bad then you have a problem, I can understand a tie rod but not a control arm. Maybe get the car checked out by another mechanic. The axle sounds more reasonable than a control arm.

 

at least that dealer isn't taking you for a ride... i'd replace all those parts too if i hit something that big... good thing is that for all those parts at the dealer + service, $500 is a pretty good deal cause control arm and strut would probably cost that much alone

 

False, control arms only mess up if they are hit from sides like in a car accident. They are exaggerating if you can get pics OP that would be great. A strut is 60, and a control arm is 140 OEM. its not half of what they are charging. Your insurance will go up, why? Because they are going to say this guy can't evade potholes and he drives through their so he is bound to hit in the future if they fix it up.

cheese, he seems like he has already made his mind up as far as what he wants to do with his car. No point really in trying to advise him any further. In fact, I'm not even sure why he made this thread.

 

ya pics would be good...wow everything is marked up here in canada ... does that include bushings and ball joint? and by strut i meant the whole assembly like a monroe quick strut, plus time to put all that on by the dealers book. thats what i thought that was gonna be replaced... but he's already figured it out and it looks like he's gonna try and get the city to pay the deductable.

insurance goes up simply cause u make a claim, even when you are the victim. up here even in a parking lot (where its 50/50 fault) by filing a claim both peoples insurace will go up a bit. insurance butt fcucks you up here in canada. especially bike insurance her vs US.

 

Insurance can mess you up, Im 16 and my parents insurance went up just because I have a permit, lol when they did I was like thats what happens when you tell insurance about everything!

 

Let the dealer check on steering gear as well. It could be out of wack too, hopefully not. If steering gear internal play due to damage, car will vibrate at around 60 mph. Make sure yoru dealer checks and/or replaces the gear under same ticket so you don't have to file 2 claims. OEM gear 1200 bucks by the way.
