*brake

With 5th gens, if the brake and battery lights come on it's due to a failing alternator. Have yours checked. Maxima alternators don't tend to last very long once they start going bad.

Just a broken belt... fixed it! Don't know why, all pulleys are good.. Im thinking it had to do with trans fluid getting on it and helpling corrode it. Trans leak was fixed btw.

A belt is cheaper than an alternator. Glad you got it fixed.

glad you located and repaired the problem. Idk how your trans leaking got on the drive belt? unless you used tranny fluid in your power steering system and that was leaking?

That does not make sense to me. The transmission is on the other side of the car. How did the fluid get over to the opposite side of the car to the belts? Was it a power steering leak instead? Mine is filled with transmission fluid. I have a leak though. The weird thing is that it stopped when the weather got warm.

Did you check the idler pulley real good? There should be no play or movement in between the bearing and the pulley. I had a two year old gatorbelt belt that got shredded because of a small amount of movement in mine. $25 part at orielys.

I was driving today and I heard weird sound and smelled a weird smell. My brake light & battery light went on AND my air conditioning stopped blowing cold. My car also started hesitating for a minute and then it rode smoother. As I approached home (25 minutes later) the car started shaking and dying. I made it home.

I shut the car off and tried to start again. It turned over a couple times but did not start and then it was completely dead on the 3rd turn of the key. I have a backup battery so I popped that in. I did the test... started the car and took the positive cable off. The car shut off.

I assume this is my Alternator? Would the air conditioner be tied to this too?
Is my 1st better dead or does it just need a charge?

Any help would be great!
Thanks guys!

captchaos did you figure it out and fix it?
I have the same thing just happen to my 2000 Maxima yesterday with the exception of the a/c problem. My car has the two lights on and a slight hesitation when first accelerating and the power windows barely crawl up.
