If there is there is pressure feeding back from the wheels to the steering column, this kind of thing happens. And since you turned the steering wheel, this sounds like it.

All you need to do is turn the steering wheel in the same direction to take the pressure off of the locking mechanism while you turn the key.

Unlock Steering Wheel

Turn ignition key as you put pressure on the steering wheel. I think mine unlocks with a left direction pressure on the steering wheel. I learned this after paying a locksmith $35.00 to free mine up!

Second that. Sometimes it's a little alarming if you're turned just right and on an incline/decline...but you'll feel it release in the wheel as you pull towards the pressure.

I had this happen with my honda years ago in the middle of a tiny town. I couldn't turn the key and couldn't remove it. The key had turned far enough for a backyard mechanic to tow me to his house. I ended up disassembling the steering column, drilling out the rivets that held the tumbler assembly to the steering column, and disabled the lockout mechanism by putting the tumbler back in place with a couple of bolts at an angle where it couldn't engage. Then I took the switch off the back of the tumbler and used a screwdriver to start the car and drive home. A locksmith fixed my tumbler for something like $40. I'm not sure if something like this is possible on the maxima though.

I have had it happen on my 07 2-3 times and yes you just need to turn wheel to the right i believe to release pressure and turn key switch. It takes some muscle to do my wife had to do when she had my car one time and it was a PITA!
