Timing Chain Question
Timing Chain Question
I have a rattling noise when i start my 2004 Nissan maxima and it usually goes away after the engine heats up or i get about 3k RPM.
Was at the mechanic and was told it was the timing chain, but not to worry about it yet. I looked it up and saw that it was pretty expensive to get fixed.
It's been making the noise for about 2 months, but in the last few weeks my MPG has gone down to 16.9 instead of about 20. Could that be causing it?
Can not fixing it for a while lead to other problems?
Is it necessary to fix immediately or is it ok to wait a bit, and if so how long is it ok to wait?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Driving patters and winter blend gas can do that to your gas, even a dirty air filter. not sure it's the timing chain that dropped your MPG...
As far as the repair, if it's under warrantee, get it fixed. Out of pocket, it's a tough pill...very expensive job for a preventive maintenance type fix. Also, it's not the chain as much as it's the guides and tensioners. If you do get the work done, get everything replaced...parts aren't as expensive as the labor.
