2004 Auto Trans Problem

I have a 2004 Maxima 5 Speed auto with just under 90,000 miles on it, maintenance has always been done by the dealer as well. While driving tonight after accelerating onto the highway the service engine light came on. I kept driving (4 miles) and then slowed for a speed limit change, when slowing down there was a loud clunk along with a backwards jerk from the car when downshifting. From that point the car would only rev while in drive and no power to the wheels. I had it towed and will hopefully know more from the transmission shop in a few days but I would like to see what others think about this situation and what I will need to have done/spend to get it fixed.

Thanks

You mean to say car only did rev but did move an inch forward? Do you know the SES code? I hope your transmission is not toasted. In that case you're looking at few grands easy to rebuild your transmission. If not then...

If transmission is not toasted then:
New valve body = $850 + $300 labor
Rebuilt valve body = $650 + $ 300 labor
Rostra solenoids = $210 + $300 labor

If transmission is toasted then:
Transmission rebuild = $2000 or lower/higher.

I gave you all possible repair cost based on your transmission shape but you may save some if you look around for good repair shop.

I am sorry man but 2004-2006 Maxima's are known to experience transmission issue.

Please read this thread. It has all possible information you can get.

Best of luck!!

This is a common problem. This exact same thing happened to me. There is a product called a level 10 valve body. Level 10 is a company that understood our cars have defective valve bodies. They sell valve bodies that fix the problem. They also sell a shift kit that helps keep shifts smooth and functional if your trans has already taken a beating from the stock VB. I would highly suggest you do this. I bought one with the kit and my car has been running/shifting flawlessly ever since. DO NOT go with a cheap VB from another company, they don't work. Level 10 is the only company known to work 100%

when I started having rough shifts, I did 3x drain and refill, and now I do one drain and refill once a year, with k matic. never had any issues since that, that was 3 years ago.
car now has 115k miles, transmission works like new.

Same here knock on wood. I drove around 50k miles after first bang that was happened few years ago. I used transtune (made by seafoam) before drain and refill.

You sure it didn't go into fail safe mode?

That was very probably what happened. @OP please insist on getting the trouble code pulled by the transmission shop and post it here.

Most likely the cam position sensors. Why it's always good to invest in a OBD II scanner and do it yourself. Cost you 40 bucks. Saves you thousands.
