Burning Oil, Whats your Remedy

Max has 224K miles, and noticed about 150K that about 2500 miles after oil change, I have to add a quart in (or that famous lifter noise starts).

Oil n Filter is changed every 3K miles. I do all the maintenance from day one.

Is there a fix? I use Castrol synthetic blend 5W30. On 3rd Caty, plugs changed,,, and the list goes onn....

Steer me to the thread if one exist......or lets chat

if youre burning oil theres nothing you can really do to permanently fix it besides figure out if its rings or valve seals causing it and repair it

otherwise just run thicker oil like 10w-30 and keep an eye on the level inbetween oil changes

Try castrol edge synthetic 0w30 made in germany which is probably the best oil by castrol. It will make that vq35de engine run super smooth like its new and it acts like a 40 weight because its thicker than other 30 weight oils which should reduce that oil burning and decrease engine wear in the morning because its a 0w30 when u will first start it in the morning the oil will shoot right up to the pistons and start lubricating.

1 quart of oil after 2500 miles isn't very much loss for an engine with 224K miles, maybe some high mileage oil will help.

You're burning relatively little compared to many with an early VQ35, so you can try Lucas Oil Stabiliser, but I think the best method, even if annoying, is to check the oil every weekend and then keep it at the top to eliminate any further engine wear that could occur with dwindling oil levels.

Not much to do unless you feel like an engine rebuild.
Add oil when needed to always keep it full.
When engine starts to drink a lot of oil i switch tocheaper oil because i dont like burning mobil 1 because it gets too expensive.

Is there any oil leaking on the engine? Obviously top it up when needed but it also doesn't hurt to check your valve cover gaskets if you have signs of oil leaking onto the engine also check your oil pan gasket and plug. Otherwise just keep it topped up unless it's bothering to the point you may want to do a swap. Amsoil is also another great synthetic to think about without having to add any additives.

+1.

The VQ will tend to lose its RMS and VC gaskets ... especially the rear VC gasket.

I had front VC leaking oil but it was very very minor. It turned out to be my oil cap was leaking oil. I am not sure how though. I replaced oil cap and all was good

Changing oil viscosity to a thicker version at the next oil change to see a difference.......????

Engine Leaks: Nope! prob one of the "Kleeeenest" engine you will see (after-all I do all the maintenance / a stickler to details, - Love my Max).

I think the current Castrol-lite viscosity maybe the culprit.??? Would love to get another 200K miles off this car before I consider any trading up....

Wonder what others see with this high mileage.

Using higher viscosity oil will just give you a small improvement, you will still be consuming oil. Tried it in one of my cars that was consuming oil.

Umm no.
0W-30 acts like a 0 weight when cold and a 30 weight for protection when it's hot. 30w isn't 40w, synthetic, German or anything else. 30w is 30w or it wouldn't have been rated as so.

there is no miracle oil.

If it leaks, fix the leak.

If it burns oil, just add oil when it burns some.... no oil or additive will fix this.

To the OP ...

You have no, none, zero symptoms of an oil consuming engine, as in smoke and/or smell?

I ask because I'd like to know when theses symptoms are most observable... On start up, on routine acceleration (i.e. from a stop light), on hard acceleration ... when?

this is the real answer. Otherwise keep adding oil until the cows come home.

At 2300 miles after my oil change. . And never fails, the lifters/ticking sound begins... then I have to add a quart... No burn.. No smoke. . Nothing. .

Been reading up on this. My car started doing this a few months after timing chain/tensioner replacement.

Doesn't sound like a real fix is out there other than watching my levels and add oil as needed? I may rebuild but that is down the road if that happens.

Have you ever changed the PCV valve? If it's clogged/blocked it can cause oil consumption. My car has 114k and if I keep it much longer I'm going to change the plugs and change the PCV valve and see if it helps my oil consumption. I'm using about a quart of Castrol 10w30 every 2,000 miles now and it doesn't leak a drop. It uses a lot more when I use Castrol 5w30, like a quart in 1,500 or less miles. That's regular Castrol, not Castrol Syntec.

I discovered something (new). The rear valve cover gasket is leaking, and for those burning oil, recommended lifting car to diagnose - dx when replacing the rear engine mounts. After much searching, a leak like this can create oil consumption, even gets worse.

Will have to remove plenum and arteries to get to it (did this surgery before), now going a bit deeper into the gutzzzzz to remove VCG.

Will update when surgery complete.
