Need Transmission Help - 06

Hey Folks,
Newbie here and need help. First let me explain the situation and ask a few questions...

Situation: I was replacing driver's CV axle (First time) and couldn't get the axle removed from the transmission. Was using internet and You Tube and someone suggested punching out axle from driver side... Obviously, it wasn't from an 06 Maxima..

So, I remover the passenger side CV axle and no transmission fluid leaker from either side. I stuck a bar into passenger side axle splines and stared pounding on the bar thinking was going to push out the driver's side axle... Needless to the say, it wasn't the driver's side axle end. It was a soft metal plate. Don't think I punctured the plate, but about a quart of trans fluid came flowing out.

Questions:
1. Can anyone tell me what I damaged and why the fluid began leaking out? Not surer what that metal plate/cover was between the two axles.

2. Any idea how I can repair or stop the leak? I'm assuming there's seal
on the passenger side axle, but not meant to stop fluid from leaking..

Thanks in advance for your help...
