The first sticky on top of 6th gen max forum will help you out.

you should search this forum for transmission solenoids.

many people try a quick fix by draining the transmission fluid and then refilling the transmission fluid (Not a FLush). Use Matic-K fluid from dealership.

If your transmission is in real bad shape you will probably need a valve body rebuild (solenoid upgrade) or new valve body assembly.

I hope this helps some.

Do you know for sure if you have all gears engaging? Also. If it's slamming hard in reverse then iwould ddefinitely drop the tyranny pan and check your solenoids. This is only if you are positive that you have every gear though. If you are missing a gear like first or top gear, you may have some more serious issues. I just replaced my 4 speed a couple months ago and if you have a pretty decent mechanical hand it's really not too difficult to swap it out with a remanned or lower milage tranny, that is of course assuming you have a hoist. If not tractor jack stands will work pretty good to.
