04 SE Catalytic and sensors

My check engine came on and took it to a mechanic. P0420. Auto zone: Catalytic. Friend of mine looked at it and indeed needs these. He got me prices for these parts and it comes out to $1900.00
Need new catalytic converters and sensors for them.
My question: can I just buy a Catback system which would be cheaper?
Any ideas? I need to get it inspected and don't want to spend $2700 once it's all said and done!
Please help a newbie out.

You don't need new Cats. Run some lacquer thinner through your system. I get this code once in a blue and this takes care of it.

you might want to look into this becaue if you drive witha bad cat and the cat gets lugged, it can lea to shooting metal shavings into yoru engine and then yoru engine will start burnign oil and one day get blown. so amybe even look into buying a aftermarket cat?

Look into racingline High flow pre cats. Great replacement for the OEM. I would do your 02 sensors at the same time. Bosch works well.

Heres the link to the cats:
