04 Maxima Camshaft Position Bank 1 Help

So my 04 Maxima's engine has been quitting while driving recently, and on occasion the RPM jumps sparatically. Then once it shuts off it takes a little time before it will start up again. sometimes it cranks for 3 seconds and sometimes 10 seconds wont work. I got the code readout and found P0340 which points to the cam sensor bank 1. After looking through this forum i believe that is the one closest to the driver and is a straight sensor. I can see where it sits in the engine but I cannot reach in and get it without first removing a few things.

My question is:
1) What do I have to remove in order to be able to get my hand in there to reach the senor.
2) If I am removing the old sensor, is there any gaskets or O-rings that I need to replace with it?

Thanks
Devin

Cam sensor

Devin,
I am having the same problem with my 04 max with 198000 miles on it. It's not difficult at all. You just have to remove the air filter box and the attachment to the throttle body. A flat head screwdriver is all you need to loosen the 2 rings holding the plastic air box .
I was told that you should use Nissan OE camshaft sensors only. Have you heard that too?
You need a #10 socket with a extension to remove the bolt. Be real gentle when you disconnect the connector from the sensor. Press in the tab and pull it off the sensor. When you take the bolt out just wiggle the sensor out.

I just finished replacing my camshaft sensors and crankshaft sensor after my car would not start. My maxima would crank but it would not start. So after replacing both camshaft sensors with Genuine Nissan parts the vehicle still not would start. My final solution was the crankshaft sensor, after replacing the crankshaft sensor she started up like a champ. The crankshaft sensor was easy to fix. Just jack up the car, unbolt the 10mm metal protector and 10mm bolt by transmission. My Maxima has 167,000 miles so the the camshaft sensors I just replaced should go bad any day now so my preventive maintenance is done. After replacing all three sensors, she runs great now.

To replace bank 1 camshaft sensor I did the same as blakednatural.

Thanks, I will give it a whirl when I get back tonight. I have also herd to only use OEM parts. Since my closest Nissan dealer is 40 miles away I am going to attempt some other brand... cross my fingers. My Maxima only has 103000! Will let you all know sooner than later how this goes.

Use Hitachi. They made the OEM Cam Sensors for the VQ35. You can find them for about half what the dealer will charge and they are the exact same part and quality.

I hope this didn't reach you too late.

Parts

I am changing out my camshaft position sensor as well. While doing so I lost the bolt that holds the senor in place.

Does anyone know where I can get one that fits????

Thanks

Parts car most likely. Or maybe a place that specializes in nuts and bolts like Fastenal or the like. Parts car/salvage yard is probably your best bet.

I would go ahead and replace both sensors. I was told that if I did one not to be surprised if the other went out soon after. I also got mine from advance auto close to a year ago and have had no issues at all.

My issue is my car will slow down to 20 MPH or less while I am driving it and pressing the accelerator while not make it go faster in and the car doesn't respond. It's very slow when it does. It will respond in N, R or Park but not in drive.

I have replaced both camshaft position sensors. Bank one and two...the car starts easier now. Before it would take 1-2 starts. It even seemed to "kill" the battery after sitting for a while.

The crankshaft sensor is next and I didn't by OEM and am concerned that I didn't. I wonder if I can get Autozone, O'Reily or BAP\GEON to check it.

This post is ironic my 06 shutoff today and then I got it started again 30 miles from home. On the highway it felt like it had no life the accelerator didn't wanna give me anything above 60 and was shifting 3000rpm I got the P0340 code.

Sounds like the same issue Chris. I would suggest changing those relays. I think P0340 is the Sensor in Bank 1. You can get one from an auto parts store but I would suggest buying OEM. Autozone charged me like $60.00 for it but the dealer wants $150.00.

Peep this. It's an older model but the same thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOGBIC_gjwo

Hi guys,
I have my 04 maxima problem which is delay in shifting the gear which makes the RPM points to 3 between 3rd shift 4th, and other question about the camshaft sensor job, does it affect the shifting of the gear? your feed back is appreciated.
