04 maxima poping noise
04 maxima poping noise
I have a 04 maxima se with 106k miles on her. I have been getting this poping noise when I turn the wheel left and right in cold weather and over speed bumps sometimes. Brought it to the dealer and they said my suspension is fine. I said "no its not" and went for a ride with the tech and of coarse it wasn't doing it. Really thought it was the strut mounts but they said they are good. Also doesn't do it in the warm weather. Any ideas? Thanks.
I had something similar happen to me recently, mine was small pop and then started sounding like my brakes needed replaced. I went ahead and replaced them and still had the noise. Mine turned out to be the wheel bearing. I recommend jacking the car up until the tire is off the ground. Holding the tire at the 12 oclock and the 6 oclock and moving towards and away simultaneously and see if it moves. If there is play, your bearings are going. You can also have a tire shop or any mechanic check for you. It should be a free check. Nothing to it. The replacement is not very hard, however if you don't have a press it can be. Some shops will remove and press the bearings for you. I will be doing a writeup on this in the next month or two as I intend on replacing the other side of my front end. If this is your problem, pm me and I will help as much as I can.
Man if you figure it out please let me know. Mine's has been doing that for about 3 years. During that time I've changed struts, strut bearings, springs, brakes, rotors, control arms, 2 motor mounts....I thought the motor mounts fixed it but after a couple of quiet weeks it's back. No, I didn't change all that stuff to try and get rid of the popping noise, it was just stuff that needed changed. There's still another engine mount and transmission mount left that haven't been changed so I might try those or I might not. If it stopped popping at this point I'd think something was wrong.
I manly notice mine when I straight the steering out of a slow turn or when I go over a hump that causes the chassis to flex a little bit. I've also changed sway bar bushings and the end links so add that to my list above. Oh, and tie rods, at some point all of those have been changed as well. I think I'll go ahead and order the other motor mount. the front one I took out was torn pretty bad the one on the passenger side had actually broken in pieces!
