2004 Maxima SL Transmission issues
Hello All, I have a 2004 Maxima SL. My car seems to hesitate when I put it in drive or reverse. This has been happening periodically for about 4 or 5 months. Today while driving my car made a reeving noise and would not accelerate. It made the same sound as if you had your car in neutral and tried to drive. I checked my transmission fluid and it was dark and very low. I had an oil change recently and they "CHECKED" my fluids and said all was well. So I called a repair shop and they told me to add fluid and shift between gears and see if that helped until I can bring the car in to be checked. It drives fine now! I plan on taking it in tomorrow, however I was just wondering if I should brace myself to hear that I need my transmission replaced, or could this be just that I need my fluid replaced? Can I tell if my transmission is shot? I don't want the dealer to try to pull a fast one. Also, if I do need to have it replaced, do I go with rebuilt or new? Please help!!!! Thanks in Advance!

04 Trans with 3rd gear not working
I just bought a 2004 Maxima w/a 5 Speed Auto trans has **** option. The 3rd gear doesn't work. I drive it in the manual options where I Rev the RPM around 4k and skip 3rd to go into 4th.
Can anybody please tell me if this is an actual tranny problem? Ive switched the Cam and VSS sensor, but nothing happened. Should I try and changing the Cam sensor toward the firewall or the Crankshaft sensor? The car came just like this and I thought maybe its a small sensor issue, but now Im clueless after trying those 2 sensors mentioned above.
Someone also told me that maybe there is a Rod or something like it that makes certain gears work and perhaps the guy who changed the oil pushed it or dropped it. I don't know, so before I take it to a shop, I'd like to hear it from one you guys.
Thanks in advance.

If adding fluid solved the problem, I wouldn't worry too much about it. When you take it in, they will probably replace the fluid. It should be sweet smelling and bright red like a cherry-aid drink. If the fluid is worn out, it will have a burned smell and brown color. They should also check for leaks around transmission hoses and gaskets just to be sure that all that new fluid doesn't leak out. I do not foresee a new tranny in your future.

If the transmission fluid get that low, there must be a leak somewhere, either axle seals which can be replace easier or the front seal which the transmission has to be remove. If it's drive fine when added fluid then keep driving it, keep an eye on the fluid level. Driving in low fluid would cause the transmission to overheat.

2006 nissan maxima (Similar issue)
hey
so i have a similar issue with a 5 speed automatic.
2 days ago i got my car back from the mechanic after he had it for 2 monthes and just changing the catalytics converter and tensioners, and tuning up my car. And when i got it back i would put it in reverse and then When i put it into drive, the car would wait 1-2 seconds and then suddenly JERK into drive....
this is an obvious transmission problem i feel like. so i chekced the fluid and the fluid was a lil off colour but nothing crazy and it looked good but the level was about 1 litre a lil too much automatic transmission fluid..... so i started driving it again the next day and the day after that and the problem hasn't come back.
should i take it to a transmission specialist to "Tune up" my transmission for about 200-300 bucks ?
what should i do if it comes back? and what could it be? etc..... eg fix valve body, tranny overhaul, etc....???
i definitely will be bringing it to the Mr. Transmission if the problem comes back/
