Trashed a stop sign in the snow

So today was a bad day for my Maxima, I was doing 15 down a road and mind it's lightly snowing I'm in Rhode Island. I was driving into a split so I just lean the car right, as I'm following The road to the right ABS locks up and I start sliding which I've done before so I wasn't worried but as I tried turning the wheel and hitting the brake the whole car locked up and shut off and I plowed into a stop sign. Front left wheel, my axel was ripped from the tranny and the control arm snapped...... Very eventful day I'm just glad there wasn't another car and I didn't die. Aside from having no clue why my entire car would lock and TURN off, I was pretty mad at the fact ABS was involved. Literally started sliding bc ABS decided to kick in. I've heard from many people that they don't like ABS, they believe it's very unsafe. Any opinions on what happened & ABS?
