2006 Maxima engine noise

Newbie to Nissan's. My boy bought an 06 with 73,000 miles (118,000 kms).

Car is in great shape overall, runs nice.

Has a weird sound coming from passenger side of the engine.

I did alot of searching on here and google, and I do not beleive it to be timing chain related.

Starting the car it is slient. To get it to make the noise you have to stab it a few times after it is warm. It is best described as a hum that is only partly connected to throttle position (as in, it gets louder when accelerating but just one adjustment louder, it is not progressive).

It is not a click type racket that I hear on the videos showing a tensioner/guide issue

It seems to be connected to the alternator load and if the fan is on or not.

Here is where I get confused,

- it will stop and start during a drive. When coming to a stop sign, it gets higher pitched for a second then dissapears

- When I listen in the engine bay it sounds like it could be coming from behind the timing cover, but maybe the sound it reverbing

Any thoughts guys?

I will try and get a video later today with the noise.

I understand you said you look at some videos but if it's coming from behind the timing cover then it's a good chance it can be the tensioner guide issue,

Depending on the wear of the timing chain guide it will depend on the pitch of the noise. my 07' Maxima had this problem and I had it fixed under my warranty.

Taking it to a mechanic to pull the belts today and rule out accessories.

The strange part is how intermittent it is. My understanding is from the videos the chain guide makes noise more on startup and is constant. My sons car makes zero noise cold, and it goes on and off.

Will post a vid when I get home. Mechanic has never heard anything like it but didnt have time to pull any belts.

Based on the sound, best chance is the secondary timing tensioner shoes.

will post when I get home.

It is the air conditioner, not sure if it is overcharged or a bad pump/compressor. Not even sure where to take it to get it fixed lol.
