'08 Maxima - Thoughts on rap noise from engine block. Anyone ?
Hey, New member, 3.5 SE w/135,000 mi.
Intermittent rap-type noise, begins between 1000-2000 rpm, stops when i remove my foot from the gas pedal, then starts back up. Does not happen while in Reverse. Attempted diagnose by Nissan dealer; first told they couldn't diagnose without removing valve cover, which i get, then told by group of techs and advisors (WITHOUT removing valve cover) that it was likely a broken bearing (ok, so which is it, need to remove valve cover in order to diagnose cause, or don't ?), thus completely wiping out any trust in the Service dept that i might've developed there. They suggest i replace the block, that even if it ISN'T the bearing, replacing all the internal parts will solve the problem, to the tune of just over $ 9300, on a car with a retail book of somewhere @ $ 7200. Now, i LOVE my Maxima, but I'm doubtful the Credit Union will approve the loan given those particulars, even if i COULD in someway justify it
Already detected leak in valve cover gasket, as well as considerable rust in oil pan (unsure yet whether or not oil is leaking through).
Any thoughts on what the noise might be ?
Plz base any ideas on experience/education on topic.
Again, I'm a new member; thank each and all of you for being here.

Sounds like the Fuel damper to me. Not to be this person, this isn't the place to come to ask these questions if you don't know how to work on cars (sorry for the assumption that you can't, just a typical thing here)
