2008 Max Knock

Bought this 08 new and has 87,000 miles. The car is 95% driven by the wife. Never had problem with this car and only maintenance performed has been brakes, oil changes, transmission and radiator service. I really love this car compared to my 03 Max that I also bought new and has 147,000 miles plus have spent some 10K towards its upkeep. Plan on keeping it another couple years. Back to the 08, it developed an engine knock I heard when wife was parking in our garage. I couldn't believe It so took it to a mechanic I know and he told me he found mains 3 and 4 to be worn and is going to replace all the rod and main bearings. Some of the cap bolts were broke and some broke when pulling the caps off. Good thing is its fixable. I've read, in the forums, that the number 1 main on the V6 engines can go bad cause knocking. Not this time. Really was a big letdown.

Going out on a limb, but it does your wife make lots of short trips on an almost cold engine?

Well it's her car and we may drive out of town once a month for couple hundred miles otherwise all else is around town. Maintenance upkeep for oil changes is kept up todate.

Fixed....still wondering how this engine suffered so much abuse. I do know that where I had my oil changes performed they overfilled by almost a quart and before I noticed by looking at the oil stick I had driven this car like that for a couple months. This car's oil level is booked at 4 1/2 quarts. I pulled out at least 3/4's of a quart to get the level back down to where it was readable on the dip stick. Not sure, but I don't think having too much oil in the sump did this engine any good.

I always heard that too much oil can damage seals, not likely to damage a bearing. That's an unqualified answer, I don't do engine work like this, so I don't know for certain. Just sounds like it was likely something else and not 2 months overfull...

When a piston slams into the oil on the way down, yes, there can very well be rod damage. Overfilling by a quart is minor, but by 3 quarts could prove fatal like in your case.

I don't believe it was that overfilled because I only drew out about 1 quart to get it to level. I didn't know there was a splash pan below the camshaft. Anyway, got it back but the mech told me to bring it back after 500 miles so he can go back to verify the torque values still hold, a one day job. You recon they do that as part of a factory assembly after a run in? I never did that ck while working on diesels in the AF.

Right, I mis-read you. Thought you had to drain 3/4 of a gallon.

Since I had the bearings replaced , had a power steering pump changed, then replaced the passenger side drive shaft, and then the alternator had to be changed. After all of these fixes I still have the EVP fix to do.....geee!!!!
