Strange noise...

Hi, I've just bought a 2006 Maxima auto, it has a noise which happens during acceleration and slowing down, it's a duh duh duh which turns to almost a constant hum at around 80kmh, the rotors on the back are shot but this noise sounds like it comes from the right front wheel.
i don't know if it could possibly be a warped rotor or something else, I've slowed down in neutral (CVT box) and the noise carries on. Any pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Bearing? CV axle? Jack up the front and spin the wheels in neutral by hand and see if you hear or feel anything. Also check your suspension bushings, control arm bushings and the ball joint in the control arm. Give the wheels a good shake at 12 and 6 oclock make sure they are solid.

Thanks for the prompt reply, I’ll take a look later this arvo, So hopefully nothing particularly bad? I’m new to the cvt and I was worried it might be that making a noise.

I’ve done as you’ve said, the only noise I can here is when I turn the wheels from side to side, the driveshaft sort of clunks when I turn the wheel then clunks again when I stop turning the wheel.

That might be your culprit then. How many miles on the car? How does the axle look, any boots torn? I would start there. I don't have any experience w nissan cvt's.

It's only done 144,000 km around 87000 miles but the chap I bought it off was young, and from the condition of the car when I bought it, no doubt hooned around in it.
Oh, the boots etc do look ok.

Either Tierod inner /outer, LCA, or front right wheel bearing....Get a large pry bry and use it to load and unload your suspension items...Do the 12 to 6 o'clock wheel deflection check (Wheel bearing), the 3 to 9 O'clock (tierod ends), and use the pry to see if you have play in your LCA bushings....Good luck!

Just to finalise my thread, it was the driverside (right hand) front wheel bearing. Had it done and it's soooo quiet now 😁

The 2004-2006 Maxima don't have a CVT transmission they came with a 5 speed automatic and some of the early 2004 SL came with a 4 speed automatic. Only the 2007-2008 Nissan Maxima have the CVT transmission for the 6th Gen.

According to the Dept of Transport here, my car is an 06 and definitely has the cvt box. I don't know how early in 07 they came in but I'm in Australia so I don't know if they came out earlier here.

Manufacture dates are what confuse people, and what cause most to misstate the truth. Cutoff dates are usually mid year. Cars built prior to June/July of a given year are considered that model year, cars built after June/July of that same year are considered next year's model. If you have an '06 with a CVT, it was probably manufactured between 06/2006 and 06/2007. Manufacture dates stated not definitive, but the concept applies generally to manufacturers across the board. Click each transmission in the list in the link and note MFG dates:

Here's a good explanation that no one will read:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_year

As for your issue, nice work, but driver's side is Left, and passenger side is Right.

I have no idea why I spent this much time on this post.
