Brought my car to Valvoline since we just had a huge snow storm in the north east. Within minutes a “technician” told me they wouldn’t able to work on my car because of an oil leak, I was shocked and surprised to say the least. As soon as I came home I jacked it up to take a look and ohhh ya there’s a leak, it looks like it’s coming from the oil filter but I feel that is the O ring behind the oil filter housing. I’m curious what you guys think and if any of you have dealt with this

Clean It off, and run the car, to identify the leak. The coolers typically don't leak. The Oil filter gasket is either Old and shrunken or loose. The Oil cooler Seal (ORing) is behind that oil cooler, and looks just like the Oil filter Seal, but is used to seal the block/Cooler. That Oil cooler gasket Can be purchased At any parts store. Both are simple fixes, Take your car to an Indy Shop and have it done. This seal can and should be done when the Oil Change is done.

Yep that's a leak. Find it and get it fixed.

Oil cooler seal was the culprit, took about 45 mins but was an easy fix. I’ve included some pictures and even the part number. My biggest concern Is that I was down to about 3 quarts of oil I’m hoping I didn’t cause extensive permanent damage, the other morning when I started my car it was extremely cold outside and I did hear some knocking......

Good Job. Not A bad job to do at all. Typically Customers see all the oil and freak out, Its just a seal. Which is easily replaced. Dorman #FTW
I doubt you've done any damage to the engine, but I'd suggest something in the 5W~ range for Winter time, Lucas Oil Stabilizer is also recommended.

Well done. Did the same surgery on my (then) 05 with same problem. That should take care of it....
