Check the park neutral safety switch. It’s located underneath the battery. I had mine go bad on a 06. Car sometimes wouldn't start. It would get stuck in 5th gear and have a clunk when coming to stop. Changed that and problems went away. If that doesn’t fix it I would go the next route of maybe changing tcm. Used one from eBay should do it. Located behind the glove box easy change. If none of those work. It’s probably your valance body/transmission.

I was able to look at the car yesterday and while checking the linkage and cable i found the chassis ground for the battery was broken, I need to replace that, I also want to replace the positive fused terminal connector, There was also a sudden noticeable oil leak from the passenger side that was not there the day i bought the car. I will investigate that next. Everything else on the car seems to function. although i do not recall if the reverse lights worked.

Ok, I made another post not paying attention. I got a p0726 error code on the thinkcar odb II scanner. I did replace the negative battery cable and and positive battery terminal. I replaced the Battery. I also replaced both transmission speed sensors. The oil leak was not as bad as i thought it was and has not done so since. I tried to run some reports from the scanner and It cannot read the data stream from the ecm. I am leaning toward a possible wiring issue. I can currently start the car with no issues. I can shift from park, to reverse(with confirming slight nudge into gear), into neutral, into first gear(with the same nudge one would expect). I can drive the vehicle about five mph in both reverse and drive. I cannot shift higher than first gear with the shift option on the right of the shifter. More than 5mph and and the car drops into neutral and i have to restart the car to get it back into gear. threr is no engine light and I cannot delete the p0726 error code. I am thinking it is not communicating between the ecm and the tcm. I also noticed the wire next to the negative battery cable connection at the transmission is broke so i am going to replace that. Is there a diagram showing all of the ground points on the 6th gen maxima so i can check them all. I am going to figure out how ot trouble shoot wiring connections so i can see if I am dealing with broken or corroded wiring.

after examining the underside of the car, i determined the oil leak was not from this car it was from the truck that was parked there the day before. there is residual oil under the car on the components but nothing to indicate it was leaking like that.

As it turns out, I only had a broken ground wire. The issue is fixed. I am excited. I am going ot go over all of my ground connections now to head off other possible issues. Next new paint and wheels.
