air bags fail to go off allthe time. i work in a body shop and have seen plenty of hits that warranted for an airbag to go off and they dont. granted i think i read in this situation the car was off, so no they wouldnt have gone off, but even if this car was being driven and the bags didnt go off, it wouldnt surprise me.

Very true. The sensors have to detect a major hit to trigger the bags (for obvious reasons), and sometimes the hit is softened by a crumpling effect during the collision, and the sensor is not aware of how hard the collision actually was. The severity of the hit in the car pictured at the top of this thread, however, was certainly hard enough to warrant deployment of the right side shoulder and head bags, so either the bag and sensor system failed to work, or those particular bags are just not visibile in this photo, or have already been removed, or the ignition was off when the car was hit.

No doubt Maximas hold up well in an accident. I was hit head-on in my '98 by a '93 and no one was hurt in either car (including his 4 passengers and my 2 passengers).

Seems like a strong car. I haven't seen too many of these driving around but aesthetics wise I prefer these over the new Altimas.

We have the official government crash tests for the '09 posted somewhere on this board. I do recall it got 5 star ratings (top score possible) all around. The 6th gen did not do as well on side impacts as the '09.

Replace the back light, 2 doors, and fender... pull out the rear quarter panel and start driving if that was an option I would keep and drive it has 900 miles. It is cosmetics its a keeper.

It is a shame that these things happen. My Dad bouth a brand new Toyota T100 in '96 and 2 weeks after he got it a 16 year old girl that JUST got her license the day before ran a stop sign and pulled out in front of him. The truck wasn't exactly totaled but my Dad is very good about getting his way. He had them total his new truck and buy him a new one. After about 3 days of negotiating the insurance company didn't have a problem with doing it. I was still in elementary school then so I don't exactly remember how it happened.

By the way, they better have someone on the yard to keep an eye on those wheels if they plan on leaving them outside. If not, they better take them off and put them inside.

I like how the damage seemed to miss the rear passenger wheel.

Wow. Airbags don't deploy if the car is off ?!? Fact? I figured they'd deploy whenever an accident occurs being that people still occupy cars without the key in the ignition.

This is as it should be. Not much of anything in a car works when the ignition is off.

Look at it this way: well over 99 percent of the time the ignition is off, the car is sitting in the garage or parking lot with nobody in it. Should someone bump into a car in those situations, we don't want the airbags going off, as, at somewhere around $2,000 per airbag per incident, one good whack could run the airbag cost alone over $10,000 bucks. Add that to a $6,000 body damage bill (doesn't take much damage to run that high), and a Maxima that wasn't that badly damaged will be totaled by the insurance adjuster.

I suppose those folks prone to sitting on the street in a car going nowhere would probably be wise to have the ignition on.

Not always the case in the deployment of Airbags!!!

My Car was struck on the passenger side front at about 25-35mph and none of my Airbags deployed.

My car is back on the road today and had the Airbags deployed normally Insurance Companies usually total out the cars because it just costs too much to re-wire the safety systems for the Airbags and all other sensors involved.

I'm glad they didn't total my car.

Sorry to hear about whoever car this was, that sucks-especially when it is brand new like this car obviously was.

WOW! Are you ok............ I mean mentally, because I would be having some kind of break-down if that was my baby and I was in your position. Personally I did not like the '09s when I saw them on commercials and on the web.................BUT THEN I SAW ONE IN PERSON, God that is a sexy car!!! LOL! But really, sorry to see her in that perdicament, glad you're ok though!

So who got the engine, huh? I think the car dealers should consider parting out the cars instead of just selling them...bigger market for parts I see.
