Can Nav be added later?
Can Nav be added later?
I have the SV with Sport...and was wondering if I DO decide I want the Nav would it be possible to have nissan swap out the console and put it in? This may sound silly...but I'm thinking of ordering a portable Nav but before I do I want to check all my options. I would imagine they would do it for less than what it costs as an option.
Thoughts? (besides go trade for one with Nav...I'm not getting into all that)

No embarrassment here. Checking out options. I dont NEED it but if I decide to go built in I want to know if it would be possible that's all. Even later on, maybe next year sometime. I plan to keep the car for a long time.
Installing the navi as the car is being assembled is easy. Probably takes minutes. Having the dealer install it later would probably result in your being billed for several hours of a service tech's time. I would be very pleasantly surprised if you drove out with the newly installed OEM navi for less than $2,300. I would expect around a $2,500 charge, and a higher quote than that would not surprise me in the least.
OEM stuff is almsot invariably less expensive when installed at the factory.

Well in the end if I decide to do it Id be willing to pay what the option cost. I'll have to call and see if this is something they can even do without disrupting the car. Will it be a challenge and result in damage to the car or is it a pretty easy swap?
I would say a minimum of 3k, if your getting factory. Also you gotta remember you would be the 1st or on eof the 1st to ever get this installed, so your car will be experimental.
Good luck.
Good luck.
if you want nav, but it's not on the lot, tell them to get you one with nav. It will cost a fortune to get it added later. I have a nice tom tom on my current car...while it's functional, I plan in getting nav as an option because it makes the interior look much nicer. Is it worth 2k?? Probably not in my opinion, but the back up camera is a fun gadget, and not dealing with wires, suction cups for the tom tom, etc is nice. I'm doing it right out if the gate for sure...
I think the nav is factory installed... In my 03 Murano asked if I can add the nav and they told me that it wasn't possible. I don't know if it's the same for the Maxima. Don't take no chances, take the nav, it's a great option!!!!
Thanks guys...looks like I'm just gonna order a garmin, a good one, and save the cash. I'd only use nav a couple times a year, so its not worth it. im better off using the cash to pay for the car. Thanks!
Another topic....I may end up selling my 99 Z28...and may end up selling it back to the chevy dealer OR to the nissan dealer I just bought from...will they make me a decent deal? OBVIOUSLY I can get more private sale, but I would think nissan would want to show good faith and buy the car off me even after the sale correct? Or I could sell it back to the chevrolet I bought it from...
Thoughts if anyone has DONE this before? And please no "they are gonna take you on the price"...I know this. I just want to know who has done it this way and how it went, is it possible, etc

If the nav is like all the previous 6th gen, if you decide NOT to go for it, it seriously cuts down on the options your car will have. With the nav/touch screen, you can control light timing, door unlocks, radio stuff and much more all from the touch screen. Without it, you get the defaults programmed in and have to take it to the dealership to adjust anything.
Nav may be added expense.... but....

After Market Nav
For those who did not get the tech package, I just purchased a Garmin Nuvi 850 with speech recognition. It's very fast, accurate, and clear. There's no voice training required. Looks cool on the center console. With speech recognition, just tell it where you want to go and it's done. It's available online only at Walmart for $599.00 I got it in store at Circuit after they matched the price (Cir City reg $699.00, Best Buy $799.00)
There's one other possibility/option if you still want to get Nav and that is to wait until there's a Max (09, of course) that has been totalled and see if you can get the Nav unit out from a Junkyard or even possibly someone may be willing to sell out theirs on Ebay or something.
It's just a thought, I hope you have success.

I wouldn't mind paying for a new unit, but the installation makes me nervous. How do I know the dealer wont mess things up taking a big unit out and putting a new one in? I would assume the work would be warrantied....if it was in the area of 1000-1500 I'd do it.

I had the dealership put a spoiler on after I purchased the car. The first time I opened the trunk, I heard hardware rattling between the liner and the sheetmetal, then I found liner clips in my trunk that were not put back. Of course I made them fix it. But there's no way I'd trust them to remove my dash after that.
Garmin on console
Here are a couple of shots of the Garmin. I tried it in various places, don't like on the window. Console seems to be okay, plus it's close to the lighter socket so not to much wire showing when charging. Sorry about the quality (camera phone), but you get the idea.

Hey which Garmin is that? It looks great where you have it...and it's nice and small. I'm going to spend good cash to get a REAL good one since I save 2k or whatever not getting it with tech package. My concern is keeping it useful yet easy to conceal. Do you just flip it into that litle storage area when you get out of the car? I love the idea of NOT mounting it somewhere..
How did you mount it where it is? I noticed the antenna on the 850 is integrated...that's perfect. The smaller the better. Could probably do a simple velcro setup to mount it where you have it and toss it in the center console when not in use. Is the little voice button easy to conceal on the steering wheel?

It comes with a litte arm attached to a suction cup. When you want to store it, just press a button to detach the unit for the mount and place in the center console. The suction cup is secured between the little storage area and the silver cover for the shifter. I've been thinking about velcro, but can't bring myself to put glue on my nice pretty interior (yet). Also it comes with a disc that you can attach to the dash then secure the suction cup to it. The only thing is that the disc is a near permanent mount. I did use it at first, but changed my mind. It was on only 5 min, and I thought I was going to break something getting it off.
I'll post some clearer pictures of the mount and accessories when I get a chance. BTW, they do make less expensive & smaller one's. But this one had the features I was looking for.

I'm looking for a good one, so price isn't a concern. I like the 800 series. I'll probably go with the 850. Is the little voice command button easy to conceal on the steering wheel? I dont want it to be obvious that the nav is in the car
More Pictures of Garmin
Here are the additional pictures. Look closely at the steering wheel or you will miss the voice remote.

Thanks. That's right suction cup to console
I gave the velcro some more thought. But more than likely the cradle would have to modified (ground down) for velcro. Because of the raised hole for the cradle to latch onto the ball, there's not enough flat surface area for velcro without changing it some how.

The suction cup holds strong. Just press it down firmly while acuating the suction. At home & work, I leave everything. When parking somewhere, I take the display off and stash it in the console leaving the arm and cradle. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to stash the whole thing, but I see people leaving theirs (display and all ) on the dashboard or windshield.
Monitor Package
I have the monitor package on my SV which gives me the backup camera and the LCD screen as will as some buttonology. I wonder how similar the wiring would be and if it would be a simple swap to add the tech package. Also, the tech package requires the monitor package to begin with.
Anyone know?
