Gas mileage
now with this being said, ill be more willing to fill up more often and not let it get anywhere to this point. Im still under the 5000 miles in two months, so if if does go wrong, then i hope its goes soon. but hopefully it wont be a problem. this could be a costly learning experience

Very wise, Heyel. There are even those who never let the tank go below a quarter full, because one never knows what may be right around the corner. I was stuck in a hick town overnight once because I had enough gas to reach this 'hick town', but found there had been a storm, and no gas pumps were working in that town (gas pumps won't work without electricity). This was in west Texas, and the next town was too far away to make it on the little gas in my tank. I have avoided letting the tank get low ever since. Especially on trips.
Stayed in a hotel, the first time my max has been outside overnight, and dang near started to panic when I saw all of the storms coming in. Figured for sure that a bunch of hail would drop and ruin the car. Thank goodness it was only 2 hours worth rain with nasty winds!
It is interesting that Hyundai and Kia just announced that they are going to revise their claimed MPG downwards. IMO Nissan should revise their MPG upwards. Just drove 1500 miles from NY to FL, all highway driving at speeds averaging 70MPH and averaged 27.9MPG. This is is much better than the 26MPG claimed by Nissan for highway driving .
I still remember my 1966 Olds Delta 88 that got 8 MPG in town and 11 MPG on the highway, and had a 25 gallon gas tank.
Been thinking of getting into a Maxima as my DD. About 5 years ago, I used my 02 Z06 as a daily driver for over 3 years. It averaged around 26 MPG during that time period. I have since gotten another Z but cannot bring myself to drive it daily it is such a nice example. Good to see the mileage is fairly comparable to the Z.
But, let's be real, those numbers don't mean jack squat. They're terribly inaccurate. I've been using an app to record each fill-up to the hundredth of a gallon, and doing that for the last 19 fill-ups. My actual number is 20.97 MPG. (I do a lot of city driving, and I'm also pretty aggressive ('cept when the newborn is in the car)). I don't know if tire size makes up for that difference? I don't know. I'm not sure how the car actually measures the amount of fuel the car uses, but being off by 1.33 MPG is pretty significant IMO.
I'm not sure what the correct term for it is - Final Drive Ratio? But I recently rented a Chrysler 300, and the cruising engine speed (RPM) was much lower at the same MPH than the engine speed in the maxima. I'm not sure if that has a lot to do with fuel economy, but it was probably about 5mpg better throughout my highway trip. I'm not sure why the maxima cruises at such a (relatively) high engine speed.
Had my Max since mid November.
Here are my numbers
Fill-up Gallons Price Odometer Total Miles Milage
11/18/12 15.402 $4.039 24,127 $62.21 369 23.958
11/23/12 14.900 $3.749 24,488 $55.86 361 24.228
11/27/12 13.812 $3.859 24,819 $53.30 331 23.965
11/30/12 15.804 $4.039 25,200 $63.83 381 24.108
12/05/12 16.249 $3.799 25,580 $61.73 380 23.386
The majority of my miles are highway. Temperature has ranged between ~30-60F between this time. Don't know if wheel size plays a role but I still have 19 inch summer tires on the car. I typically drive between 60-75mph up and down I-495 in Mass. I'm not hard on the brakes, seldom do I get on the throttle.
FWIW, my 2003 Maxima, which I believe is quite a bit lighter than the 2010, got way better milage (>3-4mpg) than this.
