Super Black Owners

Does anybody else have what appears to be dust in your paint? At first I thought it was little bits of metallic to give it a not so jet black look but I am almost 100% sure it is dust that was in the in air when they were painting the car. Is this something I should bring to the attention of the dealer?

Not that I've noticed. Could it be rail dust from being shipped by train?

I did notice this tidbit on my window sticker after I got the car home (paraphrase):

"The clear coat on your vehicle did not cure properly. As a result, a 2nd clear coat has been applied and the factory paint warranty has been extended to 6 years/72,000 miles. "

I have not noticed anything like that in mine, I'll check it more closely next time I wash it and let you know if I find any. If you do take it to the dealership go and look at the other super black Maximas first and see if any of them have anything similar in their paint.

Haha, ok I guess you will have to wait for some more responses then. Its raining now and more predicted tomorrow so I wont be washing my car for at least another day or two.

Yeah I had that stuff on my wheels, on my "Maxima" sill plates, and on my rear bumper lip. Denatured Alcohol and a spot wax will fix that as good as new.

Sputz on Paint

This is from the diesel engine that runs the trains; blow back. Get a good clay bar and use it with some detailer spray. All the stuff will come out. It did on my silver car. Just run your hand along the paint. If there is resistance it is small particles attached to the paint. It will come off beautifully.

Meguiar's Clay Kit worked fine... just make sure you use a lot of lubricant ... that sounded bad

I have a '99 with Super Black paint color. I take good care of my outside finish and use the touch free car washes, but i'm starting to see more and more of these little spots where paint is coming off as if someone dropped a bunch of sparks on the paint or something. is there some product i can use to help slow this proccess until I can afford a re-paint (in metallic black this time! lol)?

Mreim....I have noticed this silver, metallic flecks in my paint as well. It is definitely under the clear coat as nothing takes it off. Weird thing too is that is seems to be on the glass as well. I notice it on the door posts above the driver's and passengers door as well as on the glass moon roof and passenger's window, and on the passenger's front door. I mentioned it to my dealer a few days after picking up the car but have not had a chance to bring it back in.

I assume by trying everything you meant you tried a clay bar too? I just got mine in the mail, would I just be wasting my time? Any word on the dealers response?

Yep, tried the clay bar...didn't do anything for it. The most interesting thing is that it is also on the window...I assume it must be some kind of overspray that got under the clearcoat and wont come off the window.

Haven't taken to dealer yet, but I will be asap since i just started noticing some clunking coming from the front end....

Bump for update! And also a pic so everyone can see what I am talking about.

This is post-claying.

Edit: This is also Pre Paint Cleaner, Polish, and Wax. Don't judge my swirls and scratches

It appears to be a similar consistency to what is on mine, except mine is not that wide spread...

How do you mean? Your specks are more close together?

I detail my car regularly. There were some swirls from the dealer when they buffed it. I also felt very little bits of roughness on the driver's door behind the front wheel, same with the passenger's side. I clayed the entire car and waxed it. I wax it on a regular basis and my paint is flawless. I don't see any dust in the paint at all.

No, it just looks like yours covers a larger surface area. Mine in in the arm just above the driver's and passenger's front door, on the passengers window and some on the door.

Its weird since I cannot feel it at all, but also weird that it's on the glass and won't come off. I have a few other issues that need to be resolved by the dealer so I will hopefully get a chance to take it in this week.

Got appt Wed to have it looked at by the service manager (guess they have to handle anything to do with paint...).

Update:

So I took it to the dealer. Told them my story of how my car was coated with dust when I picked it up and once I washed the car my paint and windows were riddled with little specks. The reason I didn't bring this to their attention before is because I had zero confidence in the detailing department being that the should have and would have noticed this to begin with. I attempted to take care of it myself in a test sport with clay bar, paint cleaner, and polish to no effect. I had not other choice really but to take it to my dealer. The service manager and detailer both looked at it and determined it was overspray (no sh*t). And being that I am only 20 years old they just assumed I would park it by a fence or something being spray painted. Clearly being I am so young I have no idea what I am talking about. Needless to say I was getting pretty angry with the fact I was being treated like some young punk that bought daddies car, not a working man that put down half the cars value worth of a down payment. Anywhos, venting my anger aside, they said they would take it in a week from wednesday and polish it out. I will let you guys know how it goes, but don't get your hopes up because I am not.

that could be industrial fall off meaning it came like that from factory you can buy a special clay to take it off ask you local dealer.

I think you'll need a polish and then a good coat of wax to protect the paint after the polish. With black they better be very careful or it will be swirl mark city...

Best of Luck!

I will accept nothing less then a swirl free finish. I did try polish and paint cleaner. This sh*t is on their good.

Edit: I spent the better part of two hours on a 2ft x 2ft section.

Took it to my dealer yesterday and they couldn't figure out what it is. I need to take it to a different dealer that has a body shop...then will decide what to do. Ill keep posting as I get info/resolution.

hey,

former maxima owner, owned a tl for 3 years, and i just recently leased a 2009 altima SL (super black exterior)

i noticed white specks on the roof of the car similar to the pics posted. i hand washed my car twice already and they are still there. it seems to be overspray of some sort and its driving me nuts. i am most likely going to take it back to the dealer, but im sure they will be of no use to me. i will probably end up compounding/clay bar it and hope that gives me results

edit: i see youve already tried the clay bar (sorry i skipped a bunch of posts then went back and reread it) if it is embedded in the paint what could our solution be? would it come down to repainting the car

...im also 20 years old and i am afraid of the same treatment you have talked about. i pay for my own car, however i had my father in to help negotiate with me. i came back to the dealer 3 days later by myself and not one person in the dealership even looked at me for over 20 minutes.

Well people I am not impressed. After two different "power polishings" by two seperate places and a few select small area repaints the issue still remains. The first attempt was made by the dealer (never ever let the dealer power polish your car, it was covered with holograms and swirls). After this was done I noticed that my clear coat was failing on the lower section on the driver side of the front bumper. The Nissan Canada Rep was brought in to inspect and his prognosis was to repaint the clear coat issue and also repaint an area on the hood which apparently the paint had smeared and also repaint the section above the window on the passenger side (these issues I was not shown) and oh by the way my car was already at the paint shop getting painted. They power polished as well after repainting to remove the spots. I recieved my car on an extremely overcast and gloomy day so the issue was hard to spot, no matter I was off to Portland OR the next day. I get to Portland for my week long vacation and what do you know the spots are still everywhere. "Well the paint looked fine to me but I am no paint expert har har har har" was the response from the service manager (major pr*ck by the way, he makes it very clear I am wasting his time) so now I going back to the paint shop to point out what is clearly visible white specks in black paint. Is it so hard to expect a black coloured car when I did infact purchase a black coloured car and not a black coloured w/ white specks spread sporadically car? Thanks for reading my short story. I will let you know how it goes from here.

I'm not sure if you have a 2009 or 2010. I have 2010 SV in super black but don't see any of this texture your describing. I have notice though, but you have this with any black car, the sides of the car seem to get knicks and dings very easy, but I think this has to do with the fact that Nissan uses a half *** splash guard that really doesn't do anything to come down and really protect the sides of the car. These color keyed guards basically are just a flat extra piece of body panel slapped on.

That is probably why there is a separate forum on here just for installing a better and lower handing splash guard that actually protects the sides of the cars.

One thing I was surprised so far is, I haven't had any paint chips on the front end as of yet. Usually you see paint chips the most with black but thus far have not noticed any yet. But I did get the super black touch up paint if necessary.
