Reverse Tilt Mirror Function Glitch or Feature?

Yesterday I readjusted my side mirrors and programmed their positions in the memory settings. Then I decided since I would no longer really be adjusting the mirrors much that I would put the "Left/Right" switch in the center, in the "off" position to keep from accidentally hitting the direction pad and moving them, when I fumble for other controls there.

This morning when I backed into my normal parking space at work I noticed that the mirrors did not tilt down as normal. When I moved the switch back over to the left side assuming my mirrors had broken, to see if I could get them to move at all, then they tilted down while I was still in reverse.

So it appears either by design or by mistake that the Reverse Mirror Tilt function does not work or is "off" when the "Left/Right" switch is in the center.

Not a glitch, but by design.

Placing the mirror switch in the middle position disables the tilt down feature.
I suppose some people may find it distracting.

Cool, huh?

Thank god they made the feature to disable the tilt down mirrors. As cool as I think the tilt down function is I would only be using it in 0.2% of my backing up situations.

I rely more on the backup camera alot more than the mirrors. I use the on-screen lines to get me perfectly in the between the lines of a parking space. I never backed into parking spaces until I got the 09 Max. I wish there was a small front camera too, since the front end hangs lower on this car, than my previous cars. I am worried about hitting one of those concrete bumper/stoppers and scratch the front end up. I have had the car for 2 months and I have been lucky not to do it. But one day I or the wife will forget and hear a crunch and we will remember real quick.

I was trying to rally the troops to get HTPerformance to make a metal brace that fixes on to the underside of the front lip for extra stability. No luck

I thought the mirrors tilting was the glitch when it first happened. I would really be upset if there wasn't a way to disable it. Took me about a week to figure it out, though. I couldn't figure out why they would tilt sometimes and not others.

i feel for the people with out back up camera for this car. The rear deck lid is to high. But i guess you would have to do without it. I mean with out it there will be spaces you know for sure you wouldnt be able to fit in. With the camera it gives you a lot more room that you dont realize you have.

LOL 09Maxima Sam, you seem to really be enjoying your 09 Maxima from the time it got fixed from months of giving you a hard time!

Oh, and it's by design. My parents 08 Lexus GX has the Reverse Mirror Tilting Function and the switches work the same way they do on an 09 I test drove.

humm, for me to get the mirror automatic tilt down while in reverse the selection switch is in the middle/center. I always put that switch in the middle when I'm done setting up the mirror so that I don't accident changing it. Everytime I backing up, it always tilt down. So my doesn't have to be on the right/left position to get it tilt. I will try tonight when I get home to see what happen if I put in in the left/right position.

This is precisely why the mirrors tilt down (when the setting is active)... to aid in avoiding the dreaded "curb rash"

Those of us with the 19" Sport Rims can appreciate this even more because of how low the rims are to the ground.

I am glad I read this thread..because I have been having a problem. The mirrors don't go all the way back up all the way. Not sure why but they stop half way, so at a traffic light I have to put it in park and hit the "1" button.

Any ideas? For now I will just disable them.

I have a 2010 - and I've noticed that BOTH mirrors tilt down if it's in either the left OR right position. Is that correct? I've had other cars (Acura, Infiniti) that if you had it in the RIGHT position, just the right (passenger) mirror would tilt down, and vice versa, if you had it in the left ...

What's the story here? Should they BOTH be tilting down?

Yes. If the mirrow switch is anywhere other than the center position, then BOTH mirrors tilt down. This is an excellent feature, as it means you don't have to fool around with the switch when backing up to a curb/bumper, no matter which side of the car the curb/bumper is on.

That's because you must of at some point manually set up the mirrors to where you wanted them to tilt down to when put in reverse. This is all in the manual. You can set each mirror to where you want it to tilt down to when backing up and set and save.
