I do mostly highway miles so I change my own and use Mobil 1's 15,000 mile oil.

I do lots of city driving so even though I voted 3500 I always ALWAYS do maybe 2500 miles at the most.

changing every 3K is a waste of time & $. the dealers brainwash us into this. if you read the manual it'll tell you the true interval given driving conditions & habit.

I crawl under all the time & I'm getting tired. Taking it to the dealer is worst. Wait over 1 hour for something this simple is just raw.

Well I say it depends on the driving conditions but otherwise it would be foolish and very unwise to not change my oil every 2500 miles in my stop and go city driving even with the new high mileage synthetics. Honestly though, what do you lose by spending a few $$$ just to be safe. Bad oil ruins engine.

Mreim769, what do you think about those who use mobil one extended & changing oil at 15K? You must think that's insane. I would say change every 2500 if you live in extreme heat like NV or AZ & you beat the cr*p out of your max.

It is insane, in the membrane! Nah, it's just everything I have been tought tells me to change me oil at least every 2500 miles. And no that is not dealership brain wash because if I believed them I would be in the every 3500 miles. I just don't see what you have to lose to make sure your oil stays clean and fresh, it's not worth the risk to me thats all

With the use of a quality oil and quality filter, 5K is a safe bet.

why dont people just check their oil before getting it done?? i'm changing mine at 5300 after my first initial change at about 1200. i have been checking the oil ever since 4000 miles and oil is not as bad at all.

I would hope that there isn't anything I should be checking for in the oil before I get changed to begin with. This is a brand new car not a 86 Mustang the oil should not be dirty. Honestly, letting my oil go any further then 3500 miles is the same as letting my tires sit on anything less then 20 PSI. Yes, there is air in the tires but it isn't good for the tires in anyway shape or form.

3500, give or take. Just had the first change at 2000 miles figuring a little early for the first one was a good idea.

So long as my dealer's paying (as he will for the first three years)? Every three months (I won't hit the mileage during this period).

One question though. I'll almost always hit 3 months first. If I hit 3 months before 3,750 would people recommend taking it in then (I know the dealer always says whichever is first, but they're hardly disinterested parties)?

Any thoughts as to how the time interval affects the frequency of oil changes would be most appreciated.

Interesting article here: in short, nearly every other manufacturer is abandoning the 3,000 mile convention (between 7,500 (Toyota) and 15,000 (BMW)) and others just say to wait for the light (GM, Honda, Chrysler).

I can't believe Nissans require any more than these other brands????

Thanks.

The time intervals are pointless, the reason for the time intervals is because condensation/moisture builds up in the engine, as well as other components and parts of the car, but the best thing to do is drive at highway speeds for 20 to 30 minutes and all that moisture will be evaporated out, oil doe not break down from sitting in an engine, it gets contaminated with moisture and fuel, interesting fact, people who drive short distances repeatedly and who go in for an emission test/tail pipe smog test can fail the inspection cause the exhaust is so loaded up with excess fuel in the oil, a short drive down th highway and the car magically passes

Good article, but as you will find oil & octane are 2 of the most debated topics on any forum, but with oil change intervals, most people will do what their dealer or oil change place tells them, the few true enthusiast who change the oil way earlier then the suggested interval are an exception

You can safely run synthetic and go 7500 miles and still stay within Nissan guidelines with your new car warranty.

My only exception to the longer intervals is, use synthetic oil and get a used oil analysis, Ford recommends 7500 now for all their cars, but their will be the few that have driving styles that will prematurely destroy their engines, my fathers friend bought a Mazda3, and had the 1st oil change at 9000 miles, they told her bring it back at 7500 and she figured, whats an extra couple miles, when they told you 3k and you waited to 5k, it was fine, now when your at 7k and you wait to 9k, the oil probably has no life left in it at all

I hope you are talking about a computerized check, because the oil in this precision Maxima engine could look sort of the same visually after 3K or 4K miles as it did when it was put in the car. At least mine does. Engines have improved greatly from a few decades ago. Even the oil in my lawn mower, which mows a seven acre lawn, is still visually clear and clean after months of mowing in miserably hot, dry conditions.

Oils (both dino and synthetic) these days are very good, and will give extended protection. But, even though still retaining great lubricating properties, they gradually accumulate contaminants, and because of that, regular changes should still be made.

I assume you mean Used Oil Analysis (UOA) and your not visually looking at your oil to determine by color when to change it?

I agree with getting a UOA for the folks running extended change intervals. My next change will be at 6K miles.

I just switched over to Mobil1 extended and plan to run that every 7500 miles until the warranty expires. Then I will switch to the full 15000. Granted I do mostly highway diriving around 20-25k/year nothing too extreme.

Those are only two of many conditions that fall into the category of "severe service" or whatever any given car mfr decides to call it.

Also considered severe . . .
Lots of stop and go driving, lots of idling, driving that's mostly short trips where the engine (oil!) rarely warms up fully, and driving in dusty environments are just a few that came to me faster than I could type them.

I just switched over to AMSOIL after the first 11,500 miles on dino. I plan on changing every 6,000.

Here's some AMSOIL propaganda:

Ahh I see 0W-40 M1 one of the better oils for the VQ35DE.. You must follow the same forum as I 350Z.com?

I plan to switch to Amsoil too for my next oil change. I plan to use their 100% that says good for 25,00miles. But I will be doing half of that, or say about 12,500miles. I will use their filter too. Same for cabin and air filter.

Why do you call their ad propaganda? I guess people that switch to Amsoil hope to benefit with the extended OCI.

What is your own reason for switching to Amsoil?

Yeah I spend way to much time on that thread!! I recommend that thread 1-2 times a day it seems. Should be mandatory reading if you want to change your oil IMHO.

I say the same thing and I use the oil and filters, I don't like their hard sell every oil has a downside no product is perfect and the way they market it is somewhat pompous.

I switched because on my350z.com the UOA's from other members were outstanding and as good and in some areas superior to M1 0W-40 which is the BEST M1 for this exact engine. I've ran M1 for years in the past and since Amsoil really shined I decided it was well worth to try it, I'm submitting my UOA at the end of this year and we shall see how well it performs in my Max!

I was just kidding by saying "propaganda". I've been running Amsoil in my Jeep and two motorcycles for a few years, and am a convert (ran Castrol Syntec for a long time in my '98 Wrangler). I was just running the dino oil in my Max until after 10K miles, then switched to full synthetic.

I was talking today to the guy that got me into buying Amsoil as he is a dealer. He said he just changed his oil after a year and sent in a sample of his oil. The report came back saying he could run another year on it if he wanted. Just to clarify, the oil i'm talking about is the 0w30 SSO series rated for 35,000 miles. It's expensive at 10.65/qt but worth it. Also, you can't but an Amsoil oil filter for the 09 Max. So after some research I will go with the Mobile1-108 filter. Anyone know of a better filter with synthetic media?

Glenn - Amsoil filter EaO13 is the filter you can use, fits perfectly. I switched over to Amsoil 0w30 SSO and the EAO13 filter shortly after the stillen meet. If you become a preferred customer it's much cheaper. Contact talkinghorse here in the org he really helped me out!

Cheers!

Mike...are you sure about that? I talked with the Amsoil tech line a few days ago and they said not available for the 09 Max. I'll give them a call and see if they agree if that will fit...thanks.
