Anybody running 255/40/19 on their 19x8 stock wheels?
#41
Sorry, but there isn't any real tire tech in any of those links. There is a lot of "will it fit" talk and some tire salesman opinion (which is immediately suspect because of the obvious motive).
The biggest issue with running tires on rims that are narrower than the "recommended minimum" involves heat buildup in the tire sidewalls and exactly where in the sidewall that this concentrates at. So until somebody in one of those linked threads can come up with some tire industry data to support that any particular 255/40 is OK on 8" wide rims, they aren't. At least not for general service (off-highway use and possibly very short term service being excepted).
There are other disadvantages, such as less responsive handling, uneven tread wear, and more lateral tire distortion while cornering (think rubbing clearances here in some situations) issues.
Obviously this isn't an immediate pass/fail situation where mounting them on 8" is at risk of immediate failure and 8.5" is guaranteed good forever.
But the asthetic and emotionally-based reasons that are behind wanting to run the widest tire possible can't fix a technically poor wheel/tire combination (no matter how hard you wish).

Here are pics from a 7thgen owner (Glenns25, he drives 2009 Sports + Tech) on here who has 255/40/19 Hankook V12 on all 4 tires. He says ride is amazingly quiet and comfortable. He is lowered on Eibach Pro kit springs and says there is NO RUBBING or INTERFERENCE at all, even though the car is lowered than stock with his eibach springs. So, for those who are interested in doing this, it is doable and very ok. Besides, i would be puttng mine on this week or next week for sure and would share pics too.
Here are pics. He sent me like 15 pics. If you want ALL, PM me your email and I will forward pics to you.

well, its official. Got my 255/40/19 Yokohama Advan S4 put on today. Ride is AWESOME!!! I swear. Immediate night-to-day difference. Bumps, freeway lane dividers, pot holes and speed bumps are just soaked in by this tire. I barely feel these things on the road. It feels like a whole new car. PSI at 35 and I got on the freeway and as usual, I can't resisit hitting 100mph. And the car felt like I was doing only 65mph. Car feels planted on the ground. Stopping with my not so good brakes was still awesome. Straight line..., from 70mph to 20mph. Car is stbale and my rear feels like I am lowered. I am very pleased. So, 255/40/19 it is on my 19x8! With 400 thread count, i will see if I can squeeze 40k miles out of these tires. Here are some pics. Might take some better ones when I wash the car.

Understand that not all of that nice ride is coming from that particular tire's construction details - some of it is coming from the slightly too-narrow rim allowing slightly more tire sidewall deflection, which means that the tires (including/especially the sidewalls) are going to run a little hotter. Some of this energy of distortion is "recovered" as the tire springs back to its generally round shape, but the rest is transformed into heat.
At least those particular Yokohamas are A-rated on temperature. I'd seriously consider running another psi or two above the 35 if you were going to take an extended summer highway trip with the car loaded to (or slightly beyond) its rated GVW, just to reduce tire flexing. Yes, the ride will stiffen up, but pushing this percentage play in the direction of greater tire integrity margins really should be considered worth the trade-off.

Norm, thanks very much for your suggestons and ideas. I would really consider doing that. I will increase the psi and see. Well, that is only when I choose to take a trip. The tires fill the wheel well very well. My rear does feel like I am dropped. I like to look at it when i step out of the car. These tires have given my car a little bit more stability on curves too. So, if I am lucky to buy the racingling front bar, I would be very pleased.
I must mention that I just bought alien rotors and wagners for all 4 tires. I am going to change my not soo good brake rotos and pads soon. But since I installed the new tires, my so called not-so-good rotors and pads are performing like new. I don't comprehend. But oh well, I will see how long they play with my mind like this, while I am trying to decide on when to instal my new performance rotors and ceramic brake pads.

Just thought I should bump my thread. Maybe some of you guys with 19s should see that the 255/40/19 works perfect on the stock 19x8 rims. I have had mine for like 7 months now and about 22,000miles already. Car drives awesome! Just got my rear sway bars and will install sometime soon and see if this car truly handles way better than stock.
#54
Very nice, Im gonna need tires soon and was thinking about this thread so your bump was appreciated looking forward to your rear sway bar install and review, I had Nismo front and rear sways on my 06 and can only hope Nismo makes them for the current Altima and they fit on the 7th Gen if you like the rear bar I would suggest spending the money for the front, the handling characteristics you gain, you will only kick yourself when you realize how long you waited

Hey PetitFrereMaxima, sorry I never replied back to your PM, I just wanted to say thanks for the immediate reply, Im currently in Med School taking 26 credits and I could not compose enough words between studying for test after test to thank you for such an in depth reply and review of the tires, Thank you, now if only the tires did not go up in price

Just thought I should BUMP this thread to tell some of you wanting to get replacement tires to give 255/40/19 a shot, instead of stock size of 245/40/19. This thread tells you everything about 255/40/19 working awesome on the stock 19x8 wheels. I have had the 255/40/19 on the stock 19x8 on my car now for almost a year and car handles great! And I don't baby my Max, so know it is super save and performs better than 245/40/19.

Nice, it's a gamble on whatever you want, the 255 40 19 are going to give your more side wall but the 35 series will give you more speed than even your stock Tires plus better performance... but its a lost of 10% Sidewall hmmmm 40 is a good balance..
now if i were to go with the 255 i actually would chose a rim .... lets say 19 x 8.5 (the recomended ) i'm a chance taker and wouldn't mind the suspension and the spacer though that would be pushing it....

I did install my new rotors and pads a LONG time ago. I installed it on 10/06/2011. Then my braking performance improved a bit, then decreased after about 10 months. then I decided to just do a brake flush at the dealership. WOW!!! What a difference now. Car brakes way better. I bought my car brand new and only now at 129,000 miles doing a brake flush. No bueno!!! I will never go 129,000 miles between brake flush ever again. We minimize it, but a brake flush truly helps a lot. Please guys, do it to your vehicles.
Here is the thread where I installed my rotors and pads. Page 3 of the post.

I have 18" rims now and wana go 19" so if im gonna go 19 I might as well go with the 8.5 + im thinkin of doing springs with the spacer
I don't wana go 20" on this car... My goal is performance and 20" rims mess up the timing and the driving performance begins to deterior...and driving in dc u have to dodge pot holes as if your life depends on it...
1 rim cracks...all 4 rims crack.... Not worth it

You don't have to go buy a 19x8.5 rim only to buy a 255/40/19 tire, when I am living proof that 19x8 will work. If you want to buy new rims just to use the 255/40/19 tire, then I say buy 20s and use a whole different size of tire. But its totally up to you what you wish to do.

I have the 2010 19s wheels and I hit a pot hole a long time ago and bent one. I was sooooo pissed I could not even drive my car without being upset. The wheel was slightly bent, but was still ok. I was so mad I went to the dealership and almost bought a new one, until I saw on craigslist a mysterious seller selling 2 rof the stck 19 inch rims from Arkansas at a great deal.
I paid the seller and he shipped to me the 2 rims. So, I had a total of 6 of the rims. So, I took the bent one off and got it fixed for $60 and the tire is great! But I put it in my trunk as my full spare. So, I was back with 4 spotless tires on my car and I had one leftover. I put it up for sale here on the org and a 7thgen guy in California bought it. I am so glad I have 5 of these wheels.
So, know that even if you buy the 19 inch, it is not like you are protected against your rim getting bent if you hit a pot hole. If you hit it hard and the rim has to bend, it will bend.

I couldn't help but post pic of my Redline radar in this my thread. I wish I had this when my Yokohama tires were still brand new. It would compliment everything for me. but oh well, never too late to do a mod or add something new to one's car.

How much that Radar detector run you and how many times that bad boy go off in a normal working day while driving ?

You could have repaired the wheels. Small bends are easy to fix.
LOL, I didn't even know you had but 18s. Well, yours is a different case. I definitely agree that you get a 19x8.5 wheel. BUT don't think its only 20 inch wheels that get bent.

Read that post all over again. i did fix my small bend. And I still put the wheel as my spare and I have 4 spotless rims on my car. I have had them for close to 3 years now and I have NO curb rash. Even my spare is in pristine condition.

I put my first set of Yokohama Advan S4 on my stock 19x8 wheels at 85,000 miles. Now after 19 months and current mileage of 148,000 miles, I decided to put a new set of Yokohama Advan S4 255/40/19 again on my stock 19x8 wheels. Even with the high mileage, car is still driving like a champ with the 148,000 miles on odometer.
After one year and 7 months and a total of 63,000 miles on my last set of Yokohama Advan S4, today, I decided to pay off ($900) my tires on lay-away at discount tires and put my new set of Yokohama Advan S4. Last time I got a W (maximum of 168mph) rated one. This time, I got a Y rated (maximum of 186mph) one.
After the install, car drives great!!! There is just something about tires when they are new that helps a lot on a car, or atleast my car.

Thinking about switching from the michelins 245 45 18 (stock 08 maxima wheels) to either Goodyear F1 or Nitto Invo, In 255 45 18?
Has anyone done this in there 6th gen any issues?
Also anyone have any feedback on these tires?
Thanks for the help

Exactly which Michelins and exactly which Goodyear F1's?
Here's the current list of Goodyear tires with "F1" in the model name.
Extreme Performance Summer
Eagle F1 Supercar G: 2
Eagle F1 Supercar G: 2 RunOnFlat
Max Performance Summer
Eagle F1 Asymmetric
Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2
Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 RunOnFlat
Eagle F1 GS-D3
Eagle F1 GS-D3 RunOnFlat
Eagle F1 Supercar
Eagle F1 Supercar EMT
Ultra High Performance Summer
Eagle F1 GS
Eagle F1 GSEMT
Eagle F1 GS-2
Eagle F1 GS-2 EMT
Eagle F1 A/S-C
Ultra High Performance All-Season
Eagle F1 Asymmetric All-Season
And do you live where the temperatures drop below about 45°F?

According to the current issue of Consumers Report which tests tire under various conditions and is totally unbiased, the best tires for Ultra High Performance Summer tires are the Pirelli P Zero and Michelin Pilot Super sport. The Michelin, however, has the best tread life. The F1 had an average ride comfort whereas the Pirelli P Zero and Michelin Pilot Super sport had an above average ride comfort. My choice would be Michelin.

Like all summer tires, it is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.
I know from experience that there is a big drop in the grip that Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics have below about 45° vs what they have at warmer temperatures. Camaro ZL1 and 1LE owners with the Eagle F1 Supercar G: 2 tires are strongly warned about poorish cold weather grip (and possible tread cracking if you drive on them when it's really cold - last I knew this was defined as 20°F or colder).
