Removable plastic cover on front bumper - missing

My friend was checking out my car today and alarmed me when he said, "look, what happened here". Fortunately, what he noticed was that the plastic cover on the front bumper has fallen off. I'm sure it came off in the car wash I went through recently as the water pressure must have broke it off of the small retaining plastic string.

Does anyone know what this plastic part covers? I just see a hole with nothing there. Knowing what this area does may help me with describing a replacement part over the phone with the dealer.

Thanks,
TB.

If the hole is on the passenger side, just a few inches below the corner of the grille, I think that is the opening to an attachment point that is bolted to the frame and can be used to pull the car out of a ditch, etc. I have no idea what it is called. Maybe 'emergency tow attachment opening cover'? Some of the wilder drivers here (who have had to be pulled out of a ditch) should know something.

I would call it the front tie down cover. The eyelet behind the cover is connected to the frame and used for transporting the vehicle.

Thanks for responding guys - that sounds like the part.

Now, here's hoping that the dealer doesn't take forever to get it in; I imagine this part is more difficult to find as it has to be the color of your vehicle.

The part# is 62020W. Here is a link for it: http://www.courtesyparts.com/62020w-...-p-607727.html

I do not see where there are specific colors for different applications.

I would go to a local dealer to get a new one. You never wont to let water and dirt get in there may cause rust. For such a small peace it should not coast much.

I just called the dealer and I have to go in to order the part (must pre-pay). They said that the part comes in unpainted and that I will have to pay extra for them to match it to the color of my car.

While I have to wait for the part to be delivered (and painted), any tips on how I should cover up the opening without making it look any worse than it already does?

If the dealer has a body shop, ask them for a small piece of crash wrap.

Thanks for the suggestions. The body shop was closed when I ordered the part, so I simply stuffed paper towel in the opening!!! Doesn't look good but I think it should do the job until Wednesday.

Any idea how that piece came up missing? It shouldn't just fall out.

Also, the part comes unpainted so I have to pay ~$40 to get it painted the color of my Max.

I'd see if they would cover it under warranty since that piece shouldn't just come off.

Everyone washes their car, some by hand, some by car wash, some of which are touch and some touchless. Cars are made to be washed with no problem. Since manufacturers stopped putting external radio antennas on cars, no OEM part should fall off during a carwash, unless it is defective in some way.

The dealer may argue, but there had to be something wrong with that little cover for it to fall off and disappear, whether it happened during a carwash or during a drive-by shooting.
