Oil UGGGHH Confused - ??? need answering
Sorry to revive a dead thread, but should I just buy this - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mobil...#ht_3043wt_949 and do the oil change myself? Still need a filter don't I?
I haven't changed the oil on my Max myself yet so I don't know the answer to this question...
An earlier thread someone stated that they plan on changing oil every 10K but the oil filter every 5K. How can this be done without getting oil all over the place? Is the Max oil filter positioned so that it CAN be removed without draining a lot of excess oil?

The fact remains that the engine in our 7th gen was designed and built for dino oil (yes, the expensive ester oil is a dino oil), and our Maxima arrives from the factory with dino oil. Cars that come from the factory with synthetic oil are designed and built for synthetic oil. Dino and synthetic do not have exactly the same physical or operational characteristics. Synthetic gives a very slightly greater separation (hence very slightly less contact) between parts, so engine clearance designs do matter, BUT - not nearly as much as they did a few decades ago.
If I am not mistaken... An ester (which makes up ester oil) is a result of chemically reacting an oxidized acid with some sort of alcohol. This creates an extremely stable molecule that does not react to much if anything which makes it good in oils....
Now, most (all) synthetics have SOME sort of esters in them...
It's on the front of the engine (passenger side). It is protected by a plastic guard that is strapped to the bottom of the frame member. You pull the pin holding the strap to the guard - then you can push the guard out of the way to gain access to the filter.
I have been using Castrol's EDGE full synthetic and changing at 5000 miles without any issues (Just went over 30,000 on my '09) Castrol's web site allows you to join thier club for oil changes and they work with Advance Auto Parts. I just got a coupon from them a week ago and you could get 5 qts of EDGE and a K&N filter for 27 bucks!! They offer combo deals for blended oils and dino too. (dino Castrol and purelator filter for 17 bucks). I get a deal from them every 3 months....perfect timing..
I was very surprised today when I went to check the oil for the first time in my new maxima with 900 miles......the front on the dipstick read 1/2 way between L & H, the back of the dipstick oil level was up higher?? Car was fairly hot, and I gave it 20 min to settle........is the factory fill 1/2 way up he stick???? Is yours this way....I always have topped off to the H in all my other cars.
