Body Side Moldings

Just wanted to share with you all something i ordered that may not be a option for all but some may like. Here in NYC i encountered many times where people open there doors into mine and leave dings. While as of now being a going on 2 weeks old my 2010 Max is subject to this being i drive all day and park in lots ect. My father has them on his ocean gray 2010 Max as well and when i saw it for the first time i was amazed how perfect it matched and looked to me like it came with the car factory. He told me i should order them too becouse it will save some dings and protect the doors. Now, I personally like them alot, i just got mine in yesterday and going to install monday through autobody shop friend. It comes with all measurements and instructions. I will post pics of the completed job and give links for those that are interested in buying them as well. Here is a pic of the ones i received, and links to site where i ordered. You give them the color code and they match it perfect from what i see here. Comes in a set of 4 for $129 painted. Most people can install on there own but my local machanic is more inclined and tuned to do so for me. Easy job, Great look, and protection. I will update this monday with pics installed in my White 2010 Max..... P.s. The color match was 100% on point!!! Looks like factory paint! QX3

Looks good on that pic, definately will help out in NYC. Do you have any off those front and rear bumper protector things that I see lots of cars with in NYC?

No , I only will put these on. The bumper is hopefully gonna stay clean but never does(just have to parallel park away from people). I don't personally like the style of the bumper and front protector moldings on cars unless its stock ofcourse. This is as far as i would go in terms of protection and looks. After looking at above Tranzporta's, i must say that really looks good man!

thnx it reminded me of the fins you usually see on the 350z customized front lips but just didn't want that much of an affect some time less is good.

This problem of brainless nerds who simply fling their door open and let it hit where it may is the reason I have made and attached 1/2" thick 1" wide black molding around the edge of all four wheel wells on every car I have owned since back in the 1960s.

While black molding along the middle of the side of a non-black car can be distracting, I have found that black molding immediately adjacent to the dark wheel well opening is not distracting. Of course I sanded the painted surfaces that show inside the wheel well opening and painted them black.

And why do I bother protecting the wheel well lips?

When I park in a diagonal space on the right side of the road, the edge of the front door of the car to my left tends to hit the lip of my front left wheel well opening, while the edge of the driver's door of the car parked to my right tends to hit the lip of the right rear wheel well opening. These lip moldings give great protection from such malfeasance.

I have also added the protective strips along the side of every car I have owned that did not have them as OEM, except that I have not yet been able to bring myself to add them to this 7th gen, because the body lines are so perfect, and I don't want to mess with them. I keep thinking I will bite the bullet. We will see . . .

Thanks for the side molding product tip! I have to admit, it looks much better than I thought it would. In fact, I just looked out the window at my Infiniti G35, and it has (from the factory) nearly the identical molding, also painted the same body color.

Idiots who open their doors without any care drive me crazy. I've just learned to park on the far sides of parking lots. The same idiots who open their doors like that are the same ones who don't want to walk 10 further than they have too (I don't mean to offend anybody who has any inability to walk so please take me "in context").

While this is slightly off thread, I had occasion last year to try one of the local "paintless dent removal" guys to remove some especially irritating door dings in my G35. He's been doing if for years and does jobs for all the local dealerships. I have to say I was astounded. I was expecting "better than it was," but it turned out to be "perfect" (assuming the paint wasn't chipped). And amazingly inexpensive to boot.

That said, I wouldn't rule these side moldings out -- as I said, go back and look at the first gen G35s (and probably aother models) -- how "ugly" could they be if they were used on those cars?

Thanks guys for all the comments! Like i said in earlier posts above, its not for everyone and some may like, some will hate or dislike. I do not think that the pic of the maxima on their site (pic above), doesnt give full detail on how good it really looks,... I will take pics hopefully monday and post to show u all from other angles. My pops has them on his car and they look factory standard, sounds crazy but was hard to believe they were not. Also on my white color max should blend in nice and sleek looking. Also take a look on the site i mentioned where i got them. They have many cars listed with pics. Thanks again fella's and glad i can be of help with things on the forums. Nice group of people on here!!!

Naaaahhh. We're all crudniks, and are just pretending to be nice to set you up. Once we have your trust, we will pull the ladder right out from under you.

Just joshing. I'm far too old to be nice, or worry about hurting other folks feelings, but most others here are indeed nice folks.

The thing that makes these Brightrim Custom side moldings look nice is not only the perfect color match, but the neat, smooth 'finished' look of the pointers at the end of each strip. I make and install body side molding (very heavy duty, a full inch thick) on the sides of our trucks, and it takes a lot of work to make the ends of each strip look really good. With these Brightrim moldings, all we do is peel and stick.

These strips probably come with full mounting instructions. With my homemade ones, I usually mark the height I want the strip at the front end and the back end, stretch a strip of masking tape so the bottom edge sits on both marks, press it in place, and use the bottom of that tape that as a guide in placing the molding strips.

I have always been a big believer in protecting my car whenever I can find a way to do so that does not detract from the looks of the car.

thanks. I know detailed steps are very helpful, even if just one person utilizes them, it was worth the time to write it up. You get out of a forum what you put in.

Of course, I noticed that I wrote it up on 10/22, not 12/22 hahaha

Hey, hope to see pics soon. In NYC here and have the same issue. I was just at Costco and could barely slip out of my own car. I had a breakdown in Costco as i imagined some uncaring person throwing open their door into my car in a rush to get in/out. If it comes out looking good i'd love for you to tell me where you ordered them from and who in NYC installed it, I'd give them my business also.

it's really not difficult, just time consuming. I can see how it can make people nervous as there is no coming back once stuck.

I am very happy and to me personally im feeling them! Feels also a little better knowing i have some protection from people opening their doors in to mine. They look very sleek as well. Here are some pics of the final job well done~ Sorry about pics, taken from crappy mobile phone~

Thanks fellas!!! K757 i should be coming down to check it out, sounds like should be a very good time! Glad the moldings came out good myself, better then expected, i did have them put them 1" lower then the instructions said. We agreed it looked a bit better down more, hard to tell though.

Having an exact color match makes this molding less intrusive than a non-matching color molding would be. Lowering them 1 inch from recommended height may very slightly lessen their protective ability, but then that all depends on the height of the offending door hitting the car. I agree having them 1" lower looks better. They would not even be noticed by some folks, and that is exactly what we want with these things.

Keon looks great. What body shop in NY did you use? I want to get my windows tinted and get the body moldings as well. Given your shop did a fantastic job I'd love to use them.

Thanks man!!! I had them put on at a body shop in Flushing. The place is called Leo Brothers Collision, phone is 718-886-4421, 189-12 39th ave. On the same block there is a place i get my tints done at called Highline Detailing/Tints, phone is, 718-353-2830, 171-08 39th ave. Tell him the guy with the white 2010 maxima sent you. Price for me was $175 tints, and body shop for moldings is $50. May sound like alot but i wanted it done right and they took their time to install. You should make appt. for both or stop over there and talk to them. Hope this helps some~ , Also i have 35% all the way around tints, they are perfect in my eyes~

Prices sound good. I'll probably drop by next week when i have some free time. If you can recall how long did it take? I.e. did you leave it overnight or was it just a few hours? Apologies if you said already, I skimmed through but couldn't find the time frame for how long it all took.

Tinting took about 2 hours, but you need to make appointment, they have a lounge/room with tv and ac to hang out at. The moldings took about 1 hour or so, you can wait also, but call and ask when can you come and do it and wait. They are both on the same block as well...

Thanks for the idea...

Guys - Thanks for the heads up on these moldings.

The unprotected sides of our Maximas have been a source of worry about getting those dreaded door dings. I realize these moldings won't protect the wheel well areas or offending doors that can hit above or below the molding, but at least a molding can provide some protection.

Your photos proved (to me) that the moldings do not detract from the cars' aesthetics and look like something the factory should have provided.

I found this seller on eBay selling a set for only $89.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=150479877736

They arrived in about a week and the color is a perfect match. I carefully measured and installed them myself in about an hour this weekend. What an improvement in peace of mind! I'm glad I didn't wait for the first dent before installing these moldings.

Do you have any other pics. It seems like the molding for the rear door is a lot shorter than the one that Keon did. Also, I don't know if it's the angle of the picture but it seems a little higher on the right (towards the front of the car). It could just be me after working on the computer for 8 hours.

Hamzer,

You have sharp eyes! Both the front and rear moldings are a bit shorter than Keons'. These extend just to the area where the sides begin to flare out.

The instructions indicate the molding should be a bit over 1" higher at the rear, but I wanted them perfectly level so it would cut thru the air with minimal disturbance and to assure it would not introduce turbulence noise at highway speed. I measured up from the pavement to make sure the moldings are level. Depending on the viewing angle the lines of the Maxima create an illusion that make the molding appear to be at an angle.

Here are a few more angles...

Yes, the Sportwings do extend a tad into the fender flare, while Emery's strips stop just short of the flare.

And Emery's strips are installed exactly parallel with the ground, which means the subtle wedge design of the Maxima makes the front look an inch higher.

I would not have bothered to keep these things exactly parallel with the ground due to airflow, because the streamlined shape with pointed tip has no air resistance. But I might have been tempted to have them parallel with the ground in order to have uniform protection from front to rear.

One poster mounted the Sportwings two inches lower than recommended because doing so gave a more stylish appearance. All depends on what suits each person best.

Thanks for the photos - I had considered installing painted body side moldings, but have put it on "hold" for now. Am considering a lower chrome similar to the Lexus now. Decisions, decisions...lol!

Decided on bling and not practicality - here are pics of my chrome body side molding:

JohnBurns - Beautifully done. Unless one looks very closely, those would be mistaken for custom quarter panel strips.

Where did you get those chrome body side moldings from. I am really liking it, specially with the front lower grille chrome trim. The only thing I would do different is just run it in that little dimpled area under both doors and not all the way from wheel well to wheel well. Looks really nice though.
