Ester oil to synthetic?
Ester oil to synthetic?
I went to dealer today for my first free oil change and asked what oil do they use guy said regular conventional oil. I said no buddy you gotta use ester he said okay but it's extra so I spoke to his manager and he told me he'll use the ester but i have to stay ester forever and can't switch even to synthetic. He said someone messed up there engine by switching over from ester after a few oil changes. Is this true or false.
No Nissan Ester Oil isn't Synthetic and your service advisor is an idiot. You can safely switch between conventional (commonly called Dino) and Synthetic even though in this situation both are conventional oils.
I would RUN from that dealer and take my business elsewhere, they are obviously either screwing around with you or they are completely incompetent.

Usually pretty safe staying with that!
I'd ignore everything that dealership service department says, to be honest. Do what Nissan says.

Nissan of course recommends their special (and very expensive) ester oil, but the owner's manual makes it very clear that a brand name plain old dino (conventional) 5W30 oil meets ALL warranty requirements.
The three nearest Nissan dealers to me all use Shell dino 5W30 oil unless I tell them different. For my driving style, I would expect the engine to do fine for 250K or more miles on dino, as I have done over 200K on dino with past Maximas, then seen them still tooling around the area for many years after I let them go.
There should be absolutely no problem switching from ester to dino or to a synthetic blend or to full synthetic. I am surprised any service rep would say otherwise. . . . On second thought, not really surprised; just disappointed.

Sounds like Nissan reccomends reg oil then.
The dealership is NOT Nissan.
What causes confusion is that the owner's manual, which had stayed essentially the same for many years when discussing oil for the Maxima, was doctored up for the release of the 7th gen to 'recommend' the ester oil, although making it clear the name-brand SAE-approved 5W30 dino oil meets requirements.

Does the OM have any dire warning about changing from ester back to any other oil, as was professed by the delaership?
My 1st 2 oil changes where ester oil, my 3rd oil change was Castrol conventional oil, only way I could tell it was conventional was cause it got dark extremely fast, my current oil change and the one before that have both been Pennzoil Synthetic Blends, now out of all the oil brands that have been in my engine, I could not hear a difference.
