Warped rotors

Would warped rotors be covered under the new vehicle warranty?

I'm feeling some vibrations when braking that seem consistent with warped rotors on past cars. I know they eventually wear out, but a warped condition isn't the same.

It all depends on the dealer but usally the answer is NO..
I had a 2001 CL type-S that warped rotors all day long and Acura actully stepped up to bat the first time at like 8K miles to resurface them but thats it, they where no help after the first time.

It is considered wear and tear item and if there is no TSB then you are prob out of luck.. It also depends how many miles are on your car , if it is like 5K then they should help out..

If they DO NOT help you then do yourself a favor and get some EBC or DBA rotors..

Its not based on age, its based on heat/usage/hard braking etc etc.. It can happen at any time. The Max has a history of brake warpage for a long time now, due the type of rotors that Nissan uses on it.

They aren't the best rotors, I dunno whom the supplier is to Nissan for them. You will see/hear of alot of guys upgrading there rotors to various after market suppliers that make quality rotors.

With the three Nissan dealers nearest me, the 'magic' mileage for dealer help on this type problem is 12K miles. If the problem happens within the first 12K miles, the dime is on Nissan or/and the dealer. After 12K miles, it becomes a wear-and-tear item and repairs are on the owner.

But I'm sure there are dealers where things are not as clear cut.

I had warped rotors at 23,000. I don't brake hard, long, no hills, etc. Took the car in for other service & reported the pulsation in the brakes. I paid for various other things (road force balance on the Hunter machine), but they turned the rotors without charge at my dealership. They said they shouldn't have warped at this stage of the game.

I would urge you to have that dealer on speed-dial.

I think I'm SOL on this issue. I just hit 35K.

My braking habits vary by the day depending on the traffic. Some days are light braking, some hard grabs, some constant high-speed stop and go. Long Island traffic is the pits.

35k is some miles. get yourself a set of RTP from GD and be done with it.

I guess my head is in the sand. What is GD short for? And while you are at it, what is RTP?

Thanks, I have the problem at 80,000Km

Warped rotors are a Nissan trademark. I've had four different Nissans in as many years and all have warped 'em. 12k is the magic number and they'll only turn 'em. Only fix is cross-drilled or slotted, which operate at lower temps and resist warping. There are a lot of ISO 9000 aftermarket rotors available for not a lot of bux. Tri Net on eBay has worked well for me.

Another cause of warped rotors is going through water after braking hard. The rapid cooling water warps the hot rotor. This is not Nissan's fault. Rotors are not that costly so c'est la vie.

I must admit that I have had a few warped rotors on most of my previous Maximas. For a few of those Maximas, warped rotors was about the only problem I had.

This '09 is my FIRST Maxima (I have owned nothing but Maximas for 26 years) that has not had even the first whisper of rotor warping after 21 months of driving. I have my fingers crossed that my rotors will stay perfect.

Most of the time warped rotors are caused by driving habits, stopping late, high speed stops, etc. My friend and I both got our 370's within a month of each other and he has been in the shop to have his rotors turned twice! The last time he got them replaced but not under warranty. I have 26K on my Max and they are perfect and 9K on my 370 and still fine even with some track time.

You are absolutely correct that driving style often has a great deal to do with brake/rotor performance. I try to drive in a way that allows me to keep up with traffic, but with very minimal usage of the brakes. I let my speed drop well ahead of places I know I will (or probably will) have to stop. Following too closely usually results in excessive braking, also.

On slight downgrades at low speed, I take my foot totally off the gas and let Nissan's engine compression thingie (which they have had in the Maxima beginning with the '04) do its work, which often means I never have to touch the brakes.

Heavy repeated braking can overheat the rotors and begin the warping process.

I'm at 67K miles and haven't changed my brakes yet, but I definitely get a vibration when slowing down... I'm overdue.

with my acura tsx, the rotors had just a slight warp to them after 40K easy driven highway miles. Took it in to the dealer just to ask them, they drove it and said sure they shouldn't be doing that. Gave us a new TL loaner for 1 day and turned the rotors and gave us new pads!

Haven't delt with nissan dealers yet, but Acura's service and dealers were outstanding!

Rotors don't warp, it's pad material transfer that causes the pulsations.
Running a better pad for your driving habbits will help make your rotors last longer.

The Warped Disc Brake Myth is explained in detail here.
