Well, 34,000 miles on my Maxima and its getting a new transmission! On initial take off the transmission started making a whistling noise which got progressively louder. Took the car in for service and asked them to check out the noise and they came back to me and said they were replacing the whole thing. They said they were not going to mess with it by taking it apart to find the problem. Now I am driving a Chevy Aveo for a rental car, lol what a piece of junk! Wonder how long this is going to take?
I must say this is my worst Maxima to date. I owned the 5th and 6th generation Max and they were flawless. I have a laundry list going with the 7th gen though.

What a shame but I guess this is either a fluke or the product was pushed to fast into production cutting corners. This should be added to the list of issues.

i'm assuming you have an '09.... maybe it's a first year run fluke.... either way, better for it to happen while still under warranty. good luck and let us know what the dealer says about it all....

Sounds like you need to get all your service records together and find a good "lemon law attorney." If you're in CA. pm me and I can refer you to a good one.Originally Posted by nemesis04

Might be worth checking into before your 36k warranty is up. It could get you a new Maxima. I also wouldn't mention it to your dealership.

I think there may have been one other tranny replaced on the 7th gen mentioned here. There are well over 100,000 7th gens on the road now, and so far this tranny has been almost bullet-proof in reliability. This CVT is warranted for TEN YEARS by Nissan.
My '09 has been flawless, as have quite a few others here on the org. Of course many here have had one or two issues, but very few have had a laundry list of problems as you have. I would take the advice 4for4 and sgirgiss1214 gave and have the paperwork in order in case you need to pursue a lemon law situation.
PS - Tell your dealer you have no intentions of driving a Chevy Aveo very long. Either he gets hold of a new tranny fairly quickly, or you need a vehicle equivalent to the Maxima to drive. If he says even one word about 'tranny has to be shipped from Japan', tell him there are hundreds of these trannies sitting in Smyrna TN, otherwise the assembly line would not be operating.

Some drivers will hit 120,000 miles in less than 5 years of ownership.

Thanks but I am in NY and already looking into seeing what I can do as far as the lemon law is concerned.Originally Posted by 4for4

Yeah, I have no plans in riding around in this rental for very long! At first they were not going to even give me rental, they said I needed an extended warranty to get one. I told them good luck with that and it would be in their best interest to get me a rental or else. This just happened yesterday but will be calling them today to let them know that this needs to be turned around quickly! Originally Posted by lightonthehill

I will keep everyone posted on the progress. I am curious what is actually wrong with the transmission but I am sure they wont investigate it. I had no problems driving the car but the noise was getting increasingly louder pretty quickly.

guess this shows that nissan still hasnt perfected its transmission flaws SMH. this is bad. sorry about your transmission/09 maxima whoas dude

Actually, trannie failures have been extremely rare with the 7th generation Maxima; only two that I have seen here in the 2 1/4 years the 7th gen has been on the road. That is impressive when we consider we have some folks here who press their car (and its tranny) to the very limits, and then some.Originally Posted by phatboislim

The 7th gen has had fewer tranny failures than we had reported the first few years of the 5th and 6th generation here on the ORG. We have no way of knowing what the future holds, but so far, this 7th gen CVT has been an extremely reliable tranny.
After reading the experiences of drivers of CVTs in non-Nissan vehicles (a lot of manufacturers now use CVTs in some vehicles), I feel Nissan has unquestionably developed the finest CVT currently in any production vehicle.

i hope so, but because of my transmission whoas i have X'd out buying another Nissan in my lifetime, the engines are stout, btu the transmissions are *thumbs down*

**Update**
I called this morning and they feel the car will be ready for today at some point. If it does get finished the turn around seems pretty quick to me as the whole process started late Wednesday afternoon.

wait wait did you say your driving a rental car. when you buy a new car from nissan and some thing like this happen shouldn't they give you a courtesy car like another maxima or any other car from nissan to use until they fix the problem?

Haha, From what I've seen, the courtesy cars they give us are Versa's and sentra's, real cheap stuff like that you know, Im not 100% sure, but I dont think they use maximas as courtesy cars.Originally Posted by djdavebse

Now I am starting to think that I should have bought a g37x.
Sux to Hear about the loaners being versas .
When I had my Acura cl I got tl , Mdx or even a rl once as a loaner and got loaners for even oil changes.. Sux buying a car that cost 40k and no loaners!!

Just to keep in mind, the dealerships are franchised, so each dealership has its own owner. It is the owners decision on what kind of loaner to give, if to give one at all, NOT the Nissan Corp. If you go to a different dealer, you might just get a maxima loaner, especially if you're a regular there and/or purchased the car from them.Originally Posted by StonedCL

True. This is a dealer issue. I haven't had to leave my '09 for any repairs, but my dealer has several Altimas he uses for loaners.Originally Posted by nsnrider

The Nissan dealers by me at all use Enterprise when they have to give you a car. One dealership has an agreement that the car must be a Nissan product and the other just uses whatever the rental company has in stock. The reason they all stopped using their own vehicles is the liability involved with customers getting into accidents while in possession of the loaner.
I bounce back and forth between 2 dealerships, one is good for the basics and the other I use for involved services or trouble shooting. The one I use for the major projects seems to get parts extremely quickly.

They put a whole new tranny in. The guy said they don't open them up and treat them as disposables. I guess they get sent out and rebuilt somewhere.Originally Posted by nsnrider

Back in action! Actually picked it up early this morning. Need to burn the newness off it as it smells after the transmission heats up. This one feels much smoother then the original as I do not get that bog down around 40 mph. Also, this transmission does not slow the car down as much when taking your foot off the gas. Definitely wants to go! Only have one more year on the lease so hopefully it will hold together as this will end my Maxima career.

Nemesis04 - Keep us informed as to how the new tranny is doing. You are one of only two 7th gen folks on the ORG who have had a tranny replaced, so folks here will be interested in how your replacement holds up.
