Brakes and Rotor Suggestions

Hey guys,

I'm at about 34,000 KMs and the time is approaching for my first brake job. As such, I have a couple of questions:

1. Do I need to change the rotors as well? I'm an average/typical driver, never been to a track - I haven't noticed any wobbling, just a bit of squealing.
2. Do you recommend taking the car to the Nissan dealership for the brake job, or buying my own pads (and/or rotors) and taking to my local car mechanic? I've heard good things about the Hawk pads.

Thanks guys,
TB.

Just curious, why do you think you need a brake job? At 21000 miles your pads should just be getting broken in. Once upon a time brakes lasted only 20,000/25,000 miles but times has changed. Many people are getting 80,000+ miles on their original brakes. My murano had right at 100,000 miles when I traded it in and the pads still looked ok. But if you insist then change them. Hawk pads have a good reputation and should perform great for you. As far as changing the rotors then again its your call. There are some aftermarket rotors that will outperform the stock ones and are easy to change. Same as the pads, very user friendly maintenance item. Below is a link to the Murano forum that has a step by step procedure and it is probably the same as the Maxima.

Some people just like upgrading the equipment my 09 has 21k on it and as far as I know, no signs or reason to change the pads or rotors, within reason I will flush the brake fluid, usually at 40k for myself, once I notice the car has lost the edge on stopping distance

I'm at about 32,000 miles and have been wondering when everyone has been changing their brake pads. I'm hearing some squeaking from the brakes more recently and brakedust cleaner helps a little. What brake pads are you guys changing to hawk or ebc?

Put your windows down, drive around with the radio and fans off, if you hear a scraping your wear indicators are touching the rotors, tap your brakes, if you hear a scraping when you tap the brakes your pads are almost done

kinda curious on this as well. I have only 15k miles but I think my rotors are slightly warped. When in stop-n-go traffic I feel the car shuddering as a I brake at low speeds.
I am now convinced that this must have something to do with the way I drive or something because my last car did this too around 10k miles and then again at 30k. What the hell could I be doing to get my rotors warped all the time?

maybe your wheel bolts are too tight, that will usually warp the rotors.

most likely its due to your driving style. if you are hard on your brakes, then they won't last, or the rotors can warp. just take a good hard look at how you drive. By all means im not saying you are a bad driver. Just hard on your brakes.

im at ~26,000 miles and my mechanic said the back brake pads were about to go, i could verify this by hearing them squeak a little when i braked. from what I've read this car heavily brakes on the rear wheels instead of the front to keep the car from nosediving in a fast stop. I went ahead and had my rotors machined and installed EBC green stuff brake pads on the rear axle and since then haven't had any squeaks or anything and the brakes are very responsive!

Yeah I bought the car at 22k miles, was a previous lease so not sure how well the guy took care of it. Cosmetically it's in amazing condition, but I'm finding a few small things out like needing brakes prematurely. Stops great now at least.

I replaced my rears at about 48K. My fronts will need to be done next time I change my oil, at about 54k. The fronts are shuddering, so I'll probably need at least the rotors cut, and maybe new rotors. .

I'd love to upgrade to something more robust in the rotor department, since the shuddering has gradually gotten worse since about 25k miles.

Just thought I would drop some suggestions since that's what the OP wants

For rotors, I would HIGHLY suggest Alien rotors:

http://forums.maxima.org/6th-generat...roup-deal.html

Even though it is in the 6th gen section. This company sells to all. They got slotted, drilled, and drilled/slotted. Awesome customer service and quality of product.

As for pads:

EBC
Wagner
Posi
Axxis
Hawks

These are the pads that are most talked about. Each brand has performance and street pads.

After reading on the EBC website about Run-Out vs. Warping im sold. It makes so much more sense because we would have to be tracking our cars for the rotors to get so distorted. Now the cool part is that on the ebc website they have a locator tool to locate that Pro-cut on the car lathe that they show on their youtube vids. I ordred red stuff ebc pads...and once they come in im going to lathe the rotors with that pro-cut thing and see if the Run-Out issue is true.

I got green stuff ebc and machined the rotors at the same time. They create more dust than I expected but work great and I'm liking them so far!

They don't have a website but their email is in the thread (link I provided). They actually had a spot on ebay but for whatever reason, not anymore.

I emailed them, I read on the other thread that they removed their listing from ebay to avoid fees, better price for us

Definitely agree with that one. Lower prices for some quality rotors is always a good thing. Plus, they do have great customer service. Hope you enjoy them.
