Harddrive Operation via USB port on 2011 Maxima
Folks,
It's been a while since I've been on maxima.org and to view my thread on this topic.
Since I first used a regular harddrive I've switched. My original harddrive failed in my car after about 6-months of use, probably due to the Texas heat, even though I left it in the console. I switched to a SanDisk Extreme SSD that is 256GB's. Works like a charm and handles well in the car when left plugged into the USB port on the console - heat or no heat.
Not sure why other folks were having a problem with larger HD's, but again, this one and my previous mentioned in the thread work great. The beauty of the SSD drive it immediately loads up as compared to the harddrive that was about 10 seconds to load the list. Just a few thoughts.

So I found this site while researching why my 2013 Maxima SV won't recognize an external 250 GB HDD.
1. I independently found and installed the fat32format utility and created my FAT32 partition.
2. Using my 3rd party program ripped some store bought CD's into MP3's and added them into the root folder by title then audio content within
3. using a dual USB cable that came with my Vantec enclosure to my Samsung S5 USB charging port and the other to the stereo.
I get the same check USB/Ipod message on the screen as other have. Only thing in the thread I am not seeing is at what rate the MP3's were ripped. I use 384 Kbps but wouldn't think this would matter but thought I would add it there.
The port works fine with a 64GB thumb drive which is what got me to looking at the filesystem type to begin with. Thoughts and suggestions welcome.

Folks,
Sorry for the late reply. Ok for my SSD drive it's the Sandisk Extreme (current one), 120GB capacity, model number SDSSDX-120G. Had a 250GB but swapped it out for a 120 to use. It's formated for FAT32. No issues at all with plug and play with the SATA to USB connector. I don't use an enclosure, but just plug it in, in the center console and everything shows up on my screen on the car. Now some of my music (still have to figure out, but minimal songs) don't show up or can't be played it may be either the format or quality (bit rate).
Regardless, I would recommend using a SSD. It is more reliable than a HHD, especially in hot areas, load up time is very quick, and they are cheap. I just need to find out the limitations of the Maxima in formats, bit rate, etc.
Hope this helps.
EDIT: BTW I use a SATA to USB connector that came with my SSD - again no issues.

Thought I would update my journey with USB, HDD and my Maxima. I found another thread on this forum which talked about a 128GB limit that is recognized by the port. I formatted my HDD and created a 128GB primary volume, used fat32format and configured it as FAT32. Put some MP3's onto the partition and voila! Disk read correctly.
My only complaint now is the head unit of my 2013 Maxima doesn't have much functionality when it comes to reading the content. I can see the Album names but not the artist so I am assuming that I need to "massage" the layout of the drive. Anyone have pointers here? I just created top-level folders with the artist name and sub-folders with the album title.

I have my folders named like this (few examples):
My Music Mix
Rock - Variety 1990's
Third Eye Blind
Basically I have the folders named for what I have or by the artist.
Now for the songs within the folders I name them like this:
Creed - Higher
Foo Fighters - Learn to Fly
Fuel - Shimmer
Just a few examples. The folders show up, I then go into them, and my songs show up as in the examples.
Hope this helps.
