Talking 2 years in......!

So I have had my 7th Gen SV Sport Maxima for 2 years (39K miles). Here are some of the issues I've had in that time. Before I say anything though I do love the car:-
  • Steering column motor failed. The motor started making a churning noise when I exited the car and never worked again! (covered by warranty).
  • Brake light flashes up when accelerating (seems to burn through Brake Fluid). In fact I'm off to buy brake fluid this lunchtime!
  • Both back seat belts were faulty and had to be replaced (covered by warranty).
Slight Annoyances
  • Speaker vibration when playing a track with any kind of heavy bass.
  • Rattles from the center console. The cup holders squeek too!
  • The center console cushion has a strange oily patch where I rest my elbow, it keeps on reappearing after I wipe it off?! Ick!
  • The carpet holders have fallen into the carpet on both the driver and passenger sides. The mats have come apart at the seams where they lock into the holders also.
  • I wish the iPod control would remember where you are on your iPod when the car switches off, I have 5,000 tracks on my iPod and have to scroll down them if I play them one after another.
  • The car intermittently flashes up that the key is missing when it's in the car with me (the battery appears to be fine)!
  • The cargo net configuration on the sides of the trunk hold hardly anything in.
  • The sunglasses holder internal config (no lining) virtually ensures a rattle when you put your sunglasses in it and drive.
  • Service intervals at 3K miles are crazy.....
Only slight gripes. I do love the car though and would buy it again

Mine was manufactured the first week in October of 2008, and it is doing very well.

I had one of the rear seat belt assemblies replaced (would lock up and not let user move).

I don't have a sunglasses holder because I have the double panel roof, so no rattle there.

My only squeak is when the steering wheel raises to let me out of the car. I hoped that would go away, but it hasn't, so I will have the dealer fix it while I'm still under warranty.

Other than that, no problems. Even my RS-As have performed exceptionally well.

I do think the 3750 mile oil change interval is a leftover from the bygone days. For normal driving on paved roads with this engine, this is a waste of time, oil and money. I suspect Nissan would change this interval except for two things:

1 - 3750 doubled is 7500, and scheduled maintenance and service intervals for Nissan vehicles are at 7500 mile intervals. This puts every other oil change at a scheduled maintenance and service point.

2 - Oil changes are a source of dealer profit, in that having the car in for an oil change gives the dealer a chance to push wiper blades, air filters, new tires, etc.

Of course I would love a few additional features such as auto-dimming right outside mirror, power folding mirrors, etc, but this is undoubtedly the finest car I have owned in 62 years of driving, and it will be extremely difficult to let this car go when the 8th gens arrive.

The rear seat belt assemblies were doing the same thing. Watching imprisoned passengers in my rear view mirror was always fun though!!

I'm sure the 3,750 intervals are for dealers profit. I have an extended warranty on the car and assume to keep that valid I need to get it serviced at Nissan? I only serviced it 4 weeks ago and my brake fluid level was down to the minimum. I can't see a leak and am sure they never checked it although they said they did..... Not the first time this has happened there either...

Perhaps my last time heading to Santa Monica Nissan!!

In other news I bought a new Nissan branded passenger side wiper blade at Power Nissan of South Bay today. I thought $8 was incredibly cheap, of course when I went to put it on it's absolutely nothing like the OEM wiper blade!!

I love my car besides a couple things...

The "leather" on the doors shows every waterspot.

The fog light can't come on with the parking lights

The hard bar you feel when you pull out the extension on the seat

Three days in and all is good. The 3.75K oil change is shown as severe duty only. Normal driving is 7.5K which is fine for an non-turbo motor. Probably going not going to synth-oil.

Interesting about the IPOD...mine does remember where I left off and picks right back up when I turn it on (Ipod Classic 160gb)

Brake fluid? Heard that there were some that were short filled, but none that were continuing to go through it. Better get than in quickly for service!

Tilt wheel, understood. I just had both of mine replaced at 119500 miles.

I change my oil every 5000 miles (mainly highway) splitting the difference between the 3750 and 7500 but don't have it done at the dealer but do have my CVT serviced every 30000 miles or so.

Agreeing quite heartedly with Light, one of the better cars I've owned over the years and will be quite sad to see it go one of these days.

I probably didn't explain myself too well re the iPod. It stays on the track alright but if you're at a song that starts with H say, when you go to the full list of songs it always starts at A when you start the car. Then to get to that track you have to scroll for a while to get back to the tracks starting with H. Having a few thousand tracks on my iPod that takes a while!

I'm full sure I don't have a brake fluid leak, the car just seems to go through it quickly and if they don't top it up every service (as they say they do) it seems to flash up on the dash that it's low. It usually flashes up when I'm going up hill or putting the boot down so it's definitely a brake fluid level thing!

I don't think that's normal man. I'm at 18k on my 9 month old Max and i've never had to top off my brake fluid....

Two years in this month, 26,000 miles on the clock and the only problem was the rocking drivers seat. Fixed and no other problems. Oil changes with Mobil 1 5W30 every 5,000 miles. They are easy to do and not overly expensive. I have not had to add brake fluid, coolant or power steering fluid yet. So far, so good.

On a side note go buy a thin sheet of rubber material and line your cupholders and in your case sunglass holder. Make those rattles go byebye.

The price difference between Esther and Synthetic may change your mind
