Tilt steering motor?

Unfortunately I've experienced the same steering wheel motor issue that others seem to have had (on my 2009). Telescoping works fine, and the tilt wheel will go DOWN, but whenever I try and tilt it up (including when I exit the vehicle), it just makes a grinding noise, stutters a little, but won't go up.

Has anyone been able to get part #s for the two motors (more importantly, the tilt)?

I can't find it online, although I did find someone that listed a part # from a 2009 Nissan Murano which has the same issues. Don't think they interchange, but that part # is 48990-1LB6B.

Any help would be appreciated! Is it as simple as undoing the shroud around the steering column and bolting the new one in?

I would go to the dealership and see if there's a TSB for the motor. If there is they'll fix it for free even if you're out of your waranty period.

A friend of mine had the same issue and went back to the dealer to get the motor replaced. He was still under warranty so they did it for free. If your under warranty - you should def take it back to your dealership.

I have the same problem, except that neither the tilt or the telescopic motors are working, i.e. just grinding/whirring noise. I have a little over 46K on my 09 Max, but do have the extended warranty, so it will only cost $50 to have them both replaced. I took it to the dealer and they said they have to order the parts. It's been over a week and a half, and I still haven't heard from the dealer. Question is, does it usually take this long to order parts? I thought they could get parts within two or three days.

It depends i guess. It took them 6 weeks to get my brake booster in.

So I just had this issue happen to my 09 with < 48k miles on it. Of course, it's out of warranty. Dealer wants almost $800 to fix. Has anyone found the part #s yet and how difficult are they to replace?

The couple of sites I have searched show the individual motors as "NA" but are inlcuded as part of the whole steering column..........

When the dealer did my steering column motor (I had same issue) it took a couple weeks for the part to come in. I wonder if it is an entire steering column swap and they really don't sell that motor by itself. Would explain why it's $800...I really hope this motor lasts

The noise is from the worm gear screwing into the nylon bushing.....WD-40 made it worse, but little wheel bearing grease on the shaft threads (worm gear) made it go away, and has not come back to date. Took 10 minutes. Hardest thing was getting steering wheel covers off.

They dont replace the whole column, just the motor. Dont know if you buy just the motor or not.

I had the same issue of the wheel not going up and down. I had it serviced in a couple of hours. The invoice reads, " replaced tilt motor assembly." My extended warranty covered it and I paid a $50 deductible. No prices listed.

Add me to the list

The tilt motor bit the dust this past weekend. The part is on order and I hope to get it repaired by Friday. 38k miles and 40 months old. It should only be $50 w/extended warrenty.

I had the exact same issues.

I recently bought mine with 13700k on it and I had the car for 1 week and the motor went. Took it back and they gave me a BS story. I had to wait a few days as the part came from Vancouver, in the end they said that "Nissan" covered it under warranty, even though it is an 09 with extremely low mileage.

look guys, i had my tilt motor replaced under warranty for squeaking around 27k. im at around 42k and its starting to squeak again. i just disabled in the comfort settings having it auto move up/down when you get in the car. think about it, that motor engages every time you get in or out of your car, thats quite a bit of use. honestly i dont miss it, it was just something cool for my passengers to watch when they got in that's about it

Mine was replaced yesterday, $50 w/extended warranty. I don't have the option to disable the comfort settings as I am 6' and my wife is 5'2". She loves it going into the position she has set.

^^yup. So, I'm only at 17,000 miles and still under warranty (for now), but all this talk of extended warranty makes me curious. I bought my car used. Is extended warranty only for people who bought new and paid extra for an extended warranty that you can have that?

You can get one on a used vehicle. Go to

http://www.nissanextendedwarranty.co...nty_quote.html

and fill out the information and get a quote. Your best bet may be to go to the dealer and talk to them. Remember, you never accept their quote, everything's negotiable, you can get them down to a lower price.

The later in your statement is the truth, I would just disable it. Obviously Nissan isn't using the best of parts for this.... as I know some people with much older Lexus's and their electric steering columns are still going strong.

I disabled mine at 95k. Still working, but wasn't going to risk it dying out of warranty.
I have a CPO Maxima.

Tilt steering repair

I just had my tilt steering motor replaced at the dealer and I let them know I know how much the motor is and how long it takes the tech to replace. All in all no one should pay over $400 for this service. I was charged $212.00 for the motor and 1 hr of labor at $110/hr. With tax on the motor my total was $332.00. If you are being told that it will cost you $800 to replace this motor present them with these facts and see what they do. If they insist go to another dealer until you find one that is reasonable. This is a one hour job at the most!

Can you post your invoice showing the prices and parts? I would like something to show the service advisor at the stealership.

Just my 2 cents. my tilt motor went out about a year ago on my 09 and found the part online for about $150 and also found directions with a quick google search with pictures. went rather smoothly. So if your handy you can save a few bucks and do it yourself. Good luck.

Stopped using mine 5k (32K now) ago. Something one should not have to worry about along with the other issues I have with this car. I traded-in the reliability of a Camry for the "driving experience" and looks of the maxima and I'm not at all disappointed in that respect but I will totally re-evaluate all options for my next vehicle purchase.

Has the tilt motor problem been primarily limited to the earlier years of the 7th gen, or have owners of '13 & '14 model years also experienced this defect?

My 2009 has issues with the motor as well. My car is a CPO so I am not sure if this will be covered. If not, I will be taking the advice of one of the above posters. The part can be found online and as stated so are pretty good instructions. The job doesn't look too complicated. For those of you who are into DIY's I have provided a link to the service bulletin with part info and detailed install instructions.

My 09 Maxima's tilt motor just gave out a few days ago. The car only has 18k miles on it (yeah I don't drive much). Telescoping is still fine.

The wheel is in very utmost top position now, so it's very uncomfortable to hold it/drive now. Is it possible to somehow manually tilt the wheel down? Or is it all motor driven? I'd hate to spend ~$800 on it.

Read my thread. The initial version of the kit required a bit of work to get it working. Doorman updated the kit and supposedly it works fine now. I have the updated kit, but not going to take the car apart to just test it out.
