Gear Shifting Problem

Hey guys,

I recently just got two magnaflow mufflers put in and my resonator replaced with a straight pipe that is slightly small enough to just fit inside the piping where the resonator was attached too. Now when I took my car out for a test drive on the highway, it seemed very sluggish even after i floored the gas pedal, and it would climb to 7k RPMs and drop like 500 after shifting then go back. It's really awkward and doesn't shift correctly like it used too. The mechanic told me that the car had to get used to my driving again because the computer can tell the way someone drives and adjusts to them? I disconnected my battery after installing my intake a week before but it still was normal. Now after i got the exhaust in, it started doing this. Any ideas as to why the shifting is acting up, and if disconnecting the battery has an effect like that?

Thanks for the help in advance!

I may be wrong but I don't think the computer adjust to the way you drive. It may have to adjust for altered air flow (X amount of start ups or something), but I am not certain. Also, disconnecting the negative cable should have no effect like you are describing. Are you throwing any cel's?

I'm not too surprised that you're having this issue right after install. The ECM definitely needs to be reset to account for the smaller amount of backpressure you have in the exhaust system. Anytime you alter the factory airflow (i.e. intake and high flow exhaust), it's best to reset the ECM so that it takes all those new parameters into account right off the start. Otherwise, the computer might take longer to work out the new A/F ratios. Let me know if you need any help.

Well how do you reset the ECM? Is it by unplugging the battery? Because I did that twice already. If I could reset it myself that would be great. Thanks for the help!

THE RIGHT WAY TO RESET ECU

1. REMOVE GROUND FIRST, THEN POSITIVE
2. TURN ON YOUR HEADLIGHTS, TURN ONNNN NOT AUTO
3. USING UR HANDS HOLD TOGETHER THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE TERMINALS (THE CABLES) FOR 30 SECONDS
4. TURN OFF YOUR HEADLIGHTS
5. CONNECT POSITIVE (1ST) THEN NEGATIVE (2ND)

you should be good....i find that weird with your issue because when i did straight pipe with magnaflows i lost a little low end but gained high end

then again i have headers also so i dont know

So you touch positive and negative together and it won't blow anything up?

Do you let it idle for a while after doing the ECU reset or just drive as normal? I haven't done this yet I just pulled the negative and assumed the ECU would either not learn the new parts or always be resetting to factory.
