TPMS sensitivity
TPMS sensitivity
I am wondering if anyone knows the TPMS' sensor sensitivity?
I was driving to work this morning and the TPMS light came on. The temp dropped a bit overnight, it was about 36 this morning. So I pulled into the nearest gas station and checked the tires. They were all around 32-34PSIG, just short of the 35 PSI on the door label. I can't imagine that they should be that sensitive to the pressure difference...or if one of the sensors is on the fritz? I looked in the OM and there is no pressure difference mentioned. It also states that the indicator would blink for approx 1 minute and then remain on if a malfunction is detected. I don't know if it was blinking or not before it went solid as this happened when the indicator light was buried right behind the speedo needle until i got on the highway...that is when I noticed it. I figured I would top off the tires while I was there, brought them all to 35PSIG and drove off. After about a minute the light went off. I know that you need to go above 16mph for the system to recheck itself. I also know that the spare does not have a sensor....but I should have checked it anyways while the pump was going.
So back to the question, does anyone have any details on the the pressure thresholds for the sensors or any experience with this problem?
Unfortunately my car is about 3K outside of the warranty period, so I would need to pay the dealer to fix it, if that is the problem.

Man I don't know. I always had my wife asking to check our 06 Pathfinder cause she had an "upside U" on the dash and it was always after a slight temp dip. She tells me the same thing on the Max. I just top it all off using a digital PSI gauge and it shuts off after a few miles. I think the system in these cars (minus the 2012) is really primitive.
according to the manual. the recommended pressure is 33 psi and 60 psi for the spare. i cant find at what psi the light comes on though.
supposedly, tire pressure drops 1 psi for every 10 degrees in temperature. so maybe it was just the cold weather.

The lights will usually come on around one a tire goes below 29-30 psi but since it went off after you added air and drove it for a minute I'm going to say that the gauge you were using was off a bit. Those sensors are pretty accurate until the internal battery gets low or it gets damaged.
You should be fine, you will deff. notice when it starts blinking first. If you turn the ign off and back on and it blinks then you have an issue. If it stays solid then it just means low pressure.

Usually the tire light will not come on if all four tires are low together it would read of one was out of range we tend to have these problems at work quite often. But temp drop is usually a nusiance for these tpms things
If it helps, I just had to replace two bad TPMS sensors that were covered under warranty. The dealer never specificed the issue. But, I was having quite a few problems with the TMPS up to that point and now have no issues.
I emailed Nissan about this back around February of 2009, and their response said the intent is for the light to come on if the pressure drops to around 28 psi, but that there were lots of ways this could be off a bit. He said the four most likely causes for a TPMS light to come on were:
1 - Faulty tire guage. He said most gauges are off somewhat, and some are off a lot.
2 - Sudden cold snap drops the pressure in the tires, and the first one that drops near 28 degrees triggers the light.
3 - For whatever reason (slow leak, nail, flat, lack of regular checking of pressure, etc) a tire has simply dropped to around 28psi (or below).
4 - TPMS sensor is faulty.
As I carry 37 psi in front and 35 or 36 in the rear, I have not been bothered by this light.

Sounds like a bad sensor. Try this to investigate befriend having to shell out $$$: take it to your tire guy, rotate tires, fill with air and reset your sensors; if problems persists then you're looking at a faulty sensor.
Cost $55 to re-register. Given that the truck is almost 7 years old - I was sure a sensor battery had failed.
So I went to go get my wheels balanced (at a random shop) and my tire sensor pressure was broken by the mechanic. Now when I went to the dealership they said it might be covered under warranty, but they wouldn't know untill I bring it again Monday (They were closing when I went in first.)
Sorry to jack the thread but I have 35,550 miles and im a college student so im trying to figure out what to say or do to get it replace for free :/
I hate going to the dealership because they just bully me around with bs answers. Any tips or help before I go in tomorrow? Please

Mexican shop and they didn't have the part. The guy was so clueless on how it broke and I've been going for years. I'll rather have the dealership replace it just because I watched him take off my tire and it was loose for some strange reason.
I guess another question would be...Does Nissan cover the TPMS sensors and if they do under what rules do they apply by?
Ive been reading this warranty Manuel and I cant find it.
