My wife told me she was hearing a clunk sound also. I drove it and didn't hear anything, with this being her everyday car she said she doesn't hear it all the time just sometime. It's a 2012, and i have to take it in next month i will tell them then.

a clunking is normal within a few seconds of starting the car and driving off. its an abs check or something.

I just bought a 2011 and it does the same thing. It only does it when you turn the on and reach 30mph, it doesn't do it again unlil you turn the car off and back on. I took it to the dealer and they said its the abs check. I don't like the sound and was wondering if anybody elses made the noise. It sounds like your running over a piece of wire or something. You don't really notice it when you have the radio going. Next time you get in and take off, turn the radio off and excellerate slow to keep the engine noise low and start listening when your about to reach 30mph. If it happens then, it's the abs check resetting or so I'm told. Good luck

@ Car Addict
@ Berteto

The OP stated it can happen 2-3 times in a single trip. The system ya'll are referring to only happens once.

i've been looking all over this site for this problem! I have been having this problem since i got the car (2 months). the dealer said that the noise is the abs self check, but it definitely sounds like metal scrapping.

I drove another 2011 (guy from works car) maxima and his car wasnt making this noise....so it definitely isnt normal "ABS self check"

The tech's dont seem to want to do anything about it. Can someone please help?

Also, I definitely use premium, so I dont think that is the problem.

Also, forgot to add that you can actually feel the scrapping in the pedal, plus hearing the noise. not normal!

If your car is within the 30 day return window I would have them take the car back and start from scratch!

My experience with my Nissan dealership & Nissan Consumer Affairs has been appalling and I can only warn you from my experience... Nissan has refused to make my heated seat work. My sunroof jams on occasion I have owned the car since 2010 and they just informed me they would not be taking any further action to repair my car and I should contact the BBB.

I have the same thing: Mine only does it if the car sits on the parking lot, all night, or all day without running.

I pull from my parking in reverse, then i drive it slowly, but if i push the gas pedal to hit, say 2K RPM i here the Clunk, it feels as though something is really trying to catch up, or like an engine mount is bad. It's just my assumption. It does not do it anymore, after you tried it the first time.

If you are on and off the car during the day, I have tried to replicate it, but can't reproduce it. But i can reproduce it every time if the car sits overnight or all day in the parking lot. It sounds as when something gets cold, it happens, once the car gets warm, can't be reproduced.

It's annoying and i do not understand why is it happening.

Thanks!

Try what I posted, and I have had nothing but positive experience with Nissan!!! They actually made a month's payment and gave me 1 year free matenience!! Lower control arm is the problem! Once the car sits the car settles and when you put it in drive the ball joint moves and makes the clunk noise you hear

So it's just a coincidence that it does it at 30mph everytime? Is the lower arm and abs integrated anyway?

What you feel is the ABS self check... I also feel it on the accel. pedal only when the car have been sitting for a while... To me it sounds like an unwinding noise... lol

The noise isn't really a clunking noise, it's more of a scrapping (almost a bottoming out metal on pavement). You think that's the lower control arm's doing? I really find it hardto believe that I can feel and hear this so clearly when I accelerate to 30mph. I don't leave my car out either, so it's not that.

I remember that it was a scraping, clunking noise and it sounded like it was the backing plate on the front brakes!!! They said it was the lower control arm bushings flexing too much which was making the backing plate hit the rotor! Only did it when I turned the wheels at low speeds or stopped!

They actually replaced both sides! I never heard it again after that!! But my car was in the shop for 2 weeks, that is why they sent me a check for 2 weeks payment and the dealer gave me 1 year free matenance! Had to wait for the parts to come!!

just come back from dealer, and was told it is normal... just the brake doing some check... that it is a character of this car and nothing can be done to fix that... is this a bs .?

If you're hearing it more than once without the car being shut off then back on it is BS. The abs check will only run once per startup @ about 19mph

shb, the answer you received is why I no longer own a Maxima, and I will never own another Nissan or Infiniti - that is the standard answer for every issue you will have with the car. I recommend finding another dealer, and it may take trying 4 or 5 different dealers until you get one that has the skill and the willingness to address the problem.

2012 Maxima
I have the same problem.
It only does it the first drive of the day or when the car sits for a very long time. At 30 mph.

Anyone get a good answer from the dealer or a fix?

I think I know one sound some here might be describing. The one sound I hear is after I "BACK" out of the driveway and drive down the street and first apply the brakes..."It's called the break re-adjust clunk". I won't hear it again after that. Right or wrong?

Mine only happens at 30 mph, and I am NOT pressing on any brakes. First drive of the day.

Brake Squeal and Clunk, headliner rattle over my head...

Have the same thing on my 2012. Squealing now did not happen in the beggining four months ago. As far as the comment Nissans Customer Service is terrible and thats why you sold your Nissan. I agree. The service is horrendous. This is my first Nissan purchase and at this time I hate the car. Have spoken to the owner of the dealership and he told me to bring my concerns to Nissan Corporate but did not provide contact information. I have complied a list of so far 27 items where Nissan has failed the 2012 Maxima customer. I plan on testing the waters for a class action suit against Nissan. Anyone interested please private message Me.

Already filed a complaint with the federal trade commision regarding the deceptive practices by using the so called Goodyear RSA tire as an all season tire. It is not and almost drove into an electric pole the first time driving in the snow. Goodyear changed them out to Comfort Treads for $400 fee.

In addition I do think Honda, Toyota and Subaru would love to see the list of items that has been compiled becuase it would help marketing against Nissan. Plan on sharing this information with the three of them.

I didn't realize this situation is being discussed again here on the org. It was a big topic around three years ago, when the 7th gens were fairly new.

After the car has been parked awhile, and then started up, soon after the automatic door locks activate (around 15 MPH), we get a second noise. It happens between 17 and 22 MPH on my car. It is sort of a scraping noise. This is absolutely the ABS system checking itself. I saw this mentioned in a Nissan tech writeup somewhere around three years ago, but it is not mentioned in the Owner's Manual.

On my car, the noise is more noticable if I happen to be coasting on a slight downslope at the time it happens. This is NOT A PROBLEM. It is just the way the system operates.

I drove three 2012 SV sports and all 3 had the clunk.
One was barely noticable one was moderate and the 3rd was very loud.
All 3 had around 20 miles on the odometer.
Wonder why the big difference and is it adjustable?

This may not be a factor in your case, but in my car, the noise is most noticable when slowly picking up speed on a slight downgrade (and things are really quiet inside the car), and least noticable when under fairly brisk acceleration (or when the music box is playing).

As a further incongruity, the noise was much more noticable when my car was new. I have tried to hear it recently, but have not been able to do so.

I own a 2009 Maxima SV w/ Tech package. I had the same thing happen. Took it to the dealer and they took apart the axle and greased it with moly grease. It seemed to fix the prob. but I wonder for how long. I have 27,000 miles and this is the first thing to happen. I LOVE this CAR.

Front end clunk sound

I own a 2009 Maxima SV w/ Tech pkg. I have had it 3 months with 27,000miles on the odo. I love this car. Totally different feel than any other car I have ever owned. It drives just like it looks. Wide and fast. It took time to get used to the slight hum from the CVT. But have grown to like it. Anyway with that aside, I did have an irritating clunk which seemed to come from the front end of the car. Took it to the dealer and they said it was coming from the front axle and the had to disassemble and lube it with moly grease. Has anyone ran into this problem? It seemed to fix the prob. but, do you think that any damage might of happened?

Mine sounds more like a spring noice with a bit of a "clunk". It happens 2-3 times a trip. I thought it could be the AC compressor, but the dealer could not duplicate the noise. of course the moment I left I heard it again... Does anyone else feel/hear a sping-like feeling/noise?
